the prize

RSA Labs is offering a US$10,000 prize to the group that wins this contest. The distribution of the cash will be as follows:

  • $1000 to the winner
  • $1000 to the winner's team - this would go to the winner if he wasn't affiliated with a team
  • $6000 to a non-profit organization, decided by vote
  • $2000 to distributed.net for building the network and supplying the code

The vote will be decided on through an extension of the statistics engine, with one vote per block per person.

Uh oh now we've got a powerhouse on the team I joined a few days ago. I'm zooming along at a massive 180 KKeys/sec!!!!!!!!!!!!! Beat that. I will personally put us in 1st place. Oh, I have a question....I am only connected to the internet on my trashy family computer. My Thunderbird is coming in soon for my computer, so I was wondering if it is possible to run it on my computer then somehow copy it to this one to send the finished stuff/get new stuff?

The 2.2 million blocks came from Mika's proxy, which was not flushing properly these past few days. As a result, he built up an enormous buff-out file. Also, people were buffering on their own machines waiting for Mika to come back online. Look at yesterday's stats on Mika's - the first page alone adds up to 1.7 million blocks.

It was not a gift from the DPCs.

Yep, it's easy to do. The easiest way is to simply copy DNETC.EXE and DNETC.INI from one computer to the other.

Would I need to copy the buff-in and buff-out files too? And is there a way to have it retrieve more that it is now when I update the buffer, so I don't have to copy the files as often?

No, you don't want the buff*.* files, otherwise your clients will work on the same blocks until they finish and get fresh ones. It will download new work if there aren't any buff files present.

sweet, yesterday was anandtech's best day ever and it was my best day too, what a coincidence.

I can see now who is the most important member of the team.

Deeko: 180k is better than 0k. Every little bit helps and no contribution is too small. What you can do for now is unzip the client and download a large number of blocks to buff-in on a floppy (999 max?). Then run the client from it. Everyday you just take the disk and do a flush/fetch on a system with a connection to the internet. Only danger is the floppy going bad and losing a days work. Another danger (not fatal, just annoying) is running out of blocks and get a "wandering" cow cracking random blocks. If you crack a block that is already assigned, you do not get credit for it. Looking forward to your T-bird getting online.

Doh, missed the part about not connected to the net. Do a search on the Dist. Comp. forum about sneakernetting. Also, there's a guy in there who goes by Polo that wrote a program specifically to make sneakernetting easier.
