UPDATE 5/7 (MORNING):
Our Domain names have been found, and as of about 5 minutes ago registered with http://www.namecheap.com currently they have a parked page in place but hopfully soon with have a website behind each of them. the domains are....
http://www.ATgamers.net
http://www.TheGameMatrix.net

UPDATE 5/5 (MORNING):
I have started the hunt for a domain name for the TA/AT game server and want you to name it! its free, its fun, you've got nothing to loose!
Please Post your submissions in the thread. In two weeks I will create a poll and whatever has the highest amount of votes, wins.

UPDATE 3/20 (MORNING):
I have moved the updates to the top of the page instead of the bottem so you don't have to scroll a football field to get the latest news, I will be editing the post over the day to re arrange everything that way. the oldest news will be at the bottem, the newest at the top. I am also adding the wish list to the very top of the post, aswell as parts recived I will add the donar name next to the part donated once I have it all sorted out.

UPDATE 3/15 (NIGHT):
I have been asked to supply an update, so thats what I'm going to do, to date nothing has come in for the server, leaving that we need everything. we do have SOME money currently 25 dollars for misc. I am hoping that more of you are able to donate some cash even a dollar would help, if everyone who posted in this thread donated a dollar, we would have 175 bucks. if you did ship somthing, please drop me a PM so I know what to expect to cross off the list.

thanks again for ALL the support, its greatly appreciated.

UPDATE 3/9 (NIGHT):
We got unglued! oh well. I am posting the minimum server specs for Battle Field 1942 to give you all an idea on what we are going to need in terms of servers thats right I said servers that we will need to build, I say servers because I have permission for more then one. Also an update on the name, I think it will go eather by Opus:Gaming or AnandTech Game Server Sponsered By Opus:Interactive, the company that is supporting it, needs recognition for doing so. thats where the name rant came from.

Minimum server for a 20 player dedicated BF1942 server
  • PIII 800
  • X gig 7200RPM hard drive (preferably SCSI 10K drive)
  • 512 ram
  • CD-rom
  • Network Card
  • Floppy
  • video card
  • Case

BF1942:THE SERVER WILL CONSUME 85 TO 100% OF YOUR CPU. This means YOU CANNOT RUN AN INTERNET SERVER ON AND PLAY FROM THE SAME MACHINE. SERVERS MUST BE DEDICATED FOR OPTIMAL AND PROPER PERFORMANCE.

UPDATE 3/8 (AFTERNOON):
It dons on me as I sit here, that "AnandTech Game Server" might be a bit bland, and a lot of an issue, AnandTech is a corp, and I question if its a good idea to incorporate their name into a box that technical isn't theirs. One of the hold ups with the store is that very fact, that I yet have the permission to use the AnandTech Name or Logo. so lets pick a name, post your suggestions, be sure if its a URL that its not already registered. The parts list is coming just taking some time to put together, your support has been excellent, and thank pulse8 for a generous donation to the cause. There have been a lot of good offerers to sell server equipment to the cause, one limitation is funds, so if you see someone offering a good deal on hardware and think you might want to pitch in, point it out, and help us buy it that would be a huge benefit.

Thanks again for all the hardware offers I am slowly but surely catching up on getting needed items shipped, I am posting my address in the hopes that if you do have something that you might send it our way.

ATTN: Tim Thorpe (AnandTech Game Server)
5583 Basil ST NE
Salem OR 97301

UPDATE 3/5 (NIGHT):
I have posted the donation offers list here

That is a current list of what has been offered, I am making a check list right now of parts needed for a server and will post that when its done, but this should give you an idea of what is needed.
note when I say anything I mean any thing they have laying around they haven't given me any list of stuff they have, not that they can cover an entire server.

things that I know we don't have secured are
a motherboard
a rack mount server Chassis (tho I am going to use a tower if I can't get a rack-mount)
and a power supply

UPDATE 3/5 (AFTERNOON):
I am heading home for the day (from my internship) and when I get there I will continue work on the donations data sheet and have a goal to finish it by days end. I would like to post games that have been suggested to host and games I plan on hosting, if you have any experience running games servers or one of the game servers listed please PM me I am going to need all the help I can get.

Games I'm planning on hosting (IF POSSIBLE)
  • Unreal Tournament
  • Unreal Tournament 2003
  • America's Army
  • Counter Strike
  • BF 1942
  • Tribes 2

UPDATE 3/5 (mid-day):
The response has been overwhelming from the anandtech community, I am playing catch up to catalog who and what has been offered. One thing that is going to get expensive is Shipping for people sending large items like cases so some quasi cash would be nice to have so that we can reimburse at least a little bit to lighten the strain that cost can put on people.

I have had some great offers from many people willing to help, give their support, and give their goods to the cause, I am working on a layout right now to track all that and should have something by day's end, I will of course let you all know.

posted this over on the DC board, but it involves you too,

I am currently interning (for school) at a data-center (I work for ComCraperrImean ComCast) and have the opportunity to run a gaming server for the TeAm and AnandTech as a hole and was wondering (after the dismemberment of TGB.org into thegamebox.net which is not affiliated with TeAm anandtech anymore tho LD is still around TGB.net is his baby.)

was wondering if you as a community would want to help set something like this up, it will be run a bit differently from how TGB.org was handled in the respect of matches will be organized by the box operators something that was attempted by the TGB.org team however they had severe time constraints and I am sitting here doing nothing at my internship except browsing the web (great job huh?! )

what would be needed
a linux guru who doesn't mind playing babysitter wile ol narzo learns the ropes
A 2 to 4 U server Chassis
Server inboard
processors
ram
hard drive
CD rom
ect...

I know we tried this in the past, got lots of support and never really went anywhere, my hope is that we can make this work, use it as a recruitment means, and a fun place for Anandtecher's and Team AnandTech to game.

What the box will do;
Host team to team matches on games of choice
Act as a private game server for Anandtech (passworded games ect...)

my plan is to run 2 sets of servers for games you would like hosted, one public, and a set of private servers for anandtech only. Plan promote and manage board Vs. board games on a regular basis as well.

if your interested in helping out, or have suggestions or anything really, please LMK, I think if we can pull this off it would be great for the anandtech community.

Want to donate money? paypal anandtechgameserver@cleanyourdirt.com

I am also looking into accepting Credit cards for those of you who don't have a paypal account.
I can also accept checks, PM me for the address.

I've been playing with setting up servers for use during my LAN party/TA meet, and have been gaining a lot of experience with HL mods, and administration/stats systems (mainly for Counter-Strike), however this is on a Windows box, but the plugins are for Linux as well.

I'd be willing to help with the setup of any CS server

If you'd like to have a little play around in my server, to see some of the stuff that's there, take a look, connect in CS to teamanandtech.d2g.com:27015 (This won't be on all the time, and there's no guarantees someone will be there, but I may put a few bots in there to play against

Oh yeah, things I've been playing with (so you, and others, can research, if you like ) are:

HLGuard (anti-cheat stuff, aimbot detection etc)
AdminMod (allows remote administration, can set it up to use nicknames, WonID (best) and access levels, passwords etc, can control almost everything, also allows use of plugins to provide effects/game types)
AMXMod (similar to AdminMod, has some plugins that AdminMod doesn't)
StatsMe (gives detailed stats on kills, deaths, who you attacked, who attacked you etc)

Plugins I have enabled on my server:
CamperCheck - detects campers, gives on-screen notifications people are camping, slaps them for staying still
JailBreak - AMX Mod plugin, once a team member are shot/"killed", they go into jail, and other team members can rescue them, only works properly on CS maps (with hostages), not DE maps (plant bombs maps)

I'm also gonna start playing a little with UT2003 servers too soon, so I may be able to sort those out too

Also (more posts for Postcount++ ), I think a BF1942 server would be VERY good, providing of course you can provide the required bandwidth as I know a LOT of people here play BF1942, and I actually love the game too

I'll keep my eyes out to see if there is any way to run a server under Linux

COME ON GUYS LETS GET A SERVER SORTED!!!!

You think that'll help?

I'll look into BF1942 for Linux, if not, then would you consider running Windows if someone can provide a licence (not me, unfortunately)?

I can get a windows licence no problem here so that shouldn't be an issue, the bandwidth that BF1942 uses tho is extrondonaly bad, I hope someone can modify the code to use less at some point in the future but I will see what I can do, it might have to be a faily small server.

If you feel like running a T2 server (which I have done in the past, and still do) I will donate some stuff.

Well... I'm fairly Linux "guruish", but I haven't done any real game serving.
I'm willing to learn... I pick up quick...
But I do have fairly limited time.

Just how much bandwith you got? I hope your buisness has a dedicated line and is not charged per GB. I just checked my log to answer a post in software and found I have tossed in and out 147 GB so far this month. that 147 counts a 32 person T2 server, a tribe web server and e-mail. (e-mail was 2 meg of it. web is not seperated from the game server because of how the logger is set up, so I do no thave a breakdown)

the biggest hurdle right now is going to be getting a rack mount chassie, if you could get your hands on one, or get a decent price on one that would be saw33t. I am sure we could rune a tribes 2 server .

Too expensive. Get me the demensions on a 3U (or whatever the minimum is with a expansion card being straight up) and I will try ot bend one up on my brake. Nifty project

Edit: I will also need to know:

Motherboard size of mobo we will likely use. (tyan tiger dual cpu or std ATX size) and what that size is. preferably with a link to the likely board. if it is the K7S5A than say no more

the actual size of a PWS, weather it be a normal atx case one or a dual server PWS.

how many drives the system will have, and what types and their phsical sizes.

I will also need to know if there is a minimum length for ATA100 and floppy cables per spec. (maybe have custom ones made for airflow management; I don't know )

I will try my hand at designing a case specific to this project while I am at work tommorow. it will help my brain to function if I give it something to do besides the numbing stuff I usually do I will of course post pics for everyone's aproval and critiques before I start bending

Can someone point me to a site with the normal dimensions of a rackmount server? looking for width, depth, and the height of a 3U case.
