They say you should allocate 28K for each player, in theory our 128k should be able to handle 4 players, but there are always overheads and you would have to be careful about adding new maps as people downloading them into cache would kill to gameplay.

With 256k you should be able to comfortably have a 6 player server, maybe even up to 8.

Wish I had DSL......

Wish I had SDSL !!!!

I would have thought that you would have been tempted by the new ADSL package that offers 2mbps down and 400kbps up during the evening +weekends and then normal 512:256 kbps during the day

I am on normal 512:256kbps ADSL...apart from at work where we can get nothing but Dial up 56kbps until we move...sigh.

Hmmm.....I didn't read the info fully....it doesn't appear to be on every exchange, but it centred around london so surrounding counties may be able to get now....or soon....

adslguide.org lowdown

Bulldog Communications

You gotta love that Package though 2000:400 6pm - 8am weekdays, all weekend & bank holidays....then the rest of the time it is 500:400! (not 256 up as I said earlier)...hope it comes here soon (Horsham, W Sussex)

£50 Install + £40 A month.

Yikes!....they even do a 4000:400 kbps package now!!

The 1Mb service would be great - Central London only...

Thing is, I would be sceptical over the performance claims. Do Bulldog use their own DSLAMs ? If so, have they an STM-1 or STM-4 backhaul.
There is a 50:1 contention ratio...

So if it an STM-1 DSLAM = 155Mb/s backhaul (120 useable) / 4Mb/s = 30 Subscribers x 50 (contention) = 1500

Potentially 1500 people off a set of stacked DSLAMs (probably 3) over a 155 link.

Contention ratios pretty much rely on (in this example) 1 in 50 people using the service at any time....
It's the way all networks are built....(Only way to make it cost effective)..

If they have DSLAMs with STM-4 that would be OK...

I've done plenty of experimenting ,with 128k up you can't exceed 2 players joining from the net (at least on NTL cable anyway) ,I've tried it & each time the ping rate goes through the roof ,I also tried limiting the client 'connection speed' in UT to 5000 bytes/s & it doesn't make any difference.

Corm
Nice connection speeds ,but far too expensive for my likes!

Yeah I guess it is quite a premium but fairly reasonable if you consider that most companies 1mbps package is like £80 a month or something....having it so that it's only fast evening & weekends is a really neat idea

I currently pay £22.50 a month for my 512:256....and it's fast enough for sure.

Thats a good price for 512/256!

NTLs 1Mb/256 is £35/mth (or maybe £40) ,my 600/128 is £25/mth

That is good,

I pay £25 for 512/128 (Blueyonder), I always get good performance though as no one else where I live can afford broadband

shhh! ,you'll shock the people around here!

Ok server is going to be up soon (I hope)
First I'm going to update the chipset & vid card drivers ,ever since I've updated the bios to take the XP Tbred UT locks when its windowed & the mouse has not been used for a little while!
I am now running the cpu & mbrd at default speeds to eliminate any variables there.

Hopefully I'll be back soon!

Found this about running a server..

It really depends on your ADSL provider. You need to work out what your maximum upstream bandwidth is in Bytes per second. One way to do this would be to ICQ a large file to a friend who is on DSL or cable, and look at what the transfer rate is, or if you know what it is in bits per second, divide by 8. ie 256kbps upstream bandwidth is around 32000 bytes per second.

Once you have that number, work out what maxclientrate you want to give everyone. 2600 is the bare minimum and it'll give modem-like netplay for everyone. 5000 is fine for modem and ISDN users but the play won't be quite as good as it could be for ADSL or cable users. 20000 is the largest you should ever go. The number of players you can support is the upstream bandwidth in bytes per second divided by the MaxClientRate you chose. So with 32000 bytes per second of available bandwidth, you could support:

32000 / 2600 = 12 players at modem quality play
32000 / 5000 = 6 players at ISDN quality play
32000 / 10000 = 3 players at better-than-ISDN quality play
32000 / 20000 = 1 player at LAN quality play

I'd go for the 6 players at 5000 if all I had as 256kbps upstream bandwidth, because 5000 doesn't play too bad at all, and it's a good compromise.

So like you say, with 128k upstream, it look like 2/3 players max..

Uhoh, you all are still playing UT around here? I might have to reinstall it and drop in on a few games. Been quite a while since I've played any FPS, but I'm sure it'll come back to me pretty quickly . Hehe, gonna have to show you young guys how its done .

Yeah I've read all that ,I can't do 3 players regardless of what I set the client rate too ,2 is the max I can allow to connect

Amok
Your too scared of us to re-install UT

Btw ,thinking about firing up my server.

Anyone up for a game?
