Tablet marketshare numbers

We've already seen Apple boast that it's sold 15 million iPads in 2010 and commanded more than a 90 percent market share, but IDC has now come in and provided a broader picture of the tablet market as a whole -- and e-readers, too. Not surprisingly, it too found that the tablet industry is basically all about Apple at the moment, although it's market share did dip from 93 percent in the third quarter to 73 percent in Q4, which averages out to 83 percent for the year -- all told, there were 18 million tablets sold in 2010. Things are a bit more competitive in the e-reader market -- where there were 12 million devices sold -- although Amazon is still head and shoulders above everyone else with a 48 percent share. Interestingly, it's followed not by Barnes & Noble as you might expect but by Pandigital, which just eeked into the number two spot for Q4 (though B&N is slightly ahead for the full year). Hanvon came in third based largely on strong sales in China, and Sony rounded out the top five with sales of 800,000 units in 2010. Check out the press release after the break for some additional details

Of course Apple owns the tablet space but damn that's a HUGE drop. Tablet race is the smartphone race all over again, Apple jumped ahead and the competition is taking time to catch up and it'll eventually overtake it since the market will be flooded with other options. At least this time around the competition is acting quicker than it did in smartphone land. Whether you like the iPad or not, just like with smartphones, Apple created a huge rush in both those sectors and we as consumers win in the end.

in a few years there will be android 5 tablets with similar specs and usability for a lot less than the ipad. it took 4 years to get decent android phones to be free or almost free on contract

For all its faults, the Tab had a pretty significant impact. The Xoom could potentially have even more. It will be an interesting sector to watch in 2011.

I just have a hard time seeing the Xoom having a huge impact. However, the new Galaxy Tab and the G-Slate could hit them pretty hard. LG has had a pretty hard push in their mobile division since the Galaxy S came out (didn't they fire some executive in response to it?), so the G-Slate could be pretty interesting.

Well, the Xoom is just a better product than the Tab, and its more of a direct competitor to the iPad given its form factor.

However, the market as a whole is going to be flooded with potentially solid tablets from Moto, HP, LG, RIM, Samsung, and so on. Apple will likely still come out on top this year, and will sell more iPads in 2011 than they did in 2010, but it will certainly be interesting to see where it goes.

The way I see it, the tablet market will evolve differently compared to smartphones.

Everyone NEEDS a phone. And if you're due up for a free new phone in the states, there is nothing really stopping you from getting the latest be it android or ios or whatever.

Thus, the growth for android in the smartphone area is astounding especially considering pre-verizon iphones, android was all you had. So the deluge of android devices led to developers to make apps for android. The market evolved almost out of default.

In the tablet, people have to plunk down a decent amount of cash to enter the market. People will be more hesitant to buy a device that is still maturing. You don't just get to receive a new subsidized device off due to annual contracts.

I see Apple dominating the tablet industry a lot longer than the smartphone industry.

The dropped 20% marketshare in one quarter. They're already losing huge amounts of marketshare when even more real competition is still to come.

It's same thing as happened with PCs in the 80s and smarthphones. Of course "analysts" will tell you it's "totally different this time."

I'm not talking about the Tab that's already on sale, but the one coming out.

This is more the iPad Lookalike Market than the tablet market that has existed long before the iPad ever came out. With that in mind, it's no surprise they have it all bottled up. As more Android tablets get released, you will see their marketshare seem to jump up really high, but that's expected when new competition enters the arena (i.e. if there's 100 iPads and 10 Xooms and next month there are 110 iPads and 20 Xooms, Android can boast a "100%" rise).

Yep. Current numbers will look like chump change when tablets reach commodity level pricing.

How many users buy the Xoom, see the software issues (software crashes, non-working SD card reader) and return it? Motorola dropped the ball. The Xoom was released too early in an effort to try to get a jump on the iPad 2. The hardware specs may sound nice but it obviously needed at least another month or two to incubate. By the time they get the issues fixed, there will be a flood of Honeycomb tablets in the market.

We also have to remember this this is discussing units shipped.
We all know how many Tabs were shipped compared to actually sold.

While Engadget quotes the press release correctly in their article title, they misquote it in the body of their article.

Apple has the first move advantage, but I think they also have the most aggressive marketing. Even though there are competitors now, Apple has caught the public imagination via better marketing, since the iPad was the first mass-marketed tablet.

It's a brand, and the Xoom and Galaxy Tab (despite being good models) cannot really compare in terms of brand strength. Only computer-savvy people know of these devices. It's similar to the iPhone. There are plenty of other good models of similar functionality, but HTC or Samsung's phones don't command the same brand strength.

I agree with this haha.

93 iPads 7 other =
93% Apple 7% Other

120 iPads 40 Xooms =
75% Apple 25% Other

Unit growth would still be in Apple's favor with 37, vs 33 for Other.

Everything always reaches a plateau. It's easy to go from 3 miles/hour walking speeds to 6 miles/hour walking speeds. It's another thing to go from 11 miles/hour to 22 miles/hour. 11 miles/hour is what 95% of the population can do, and the latter is only reserved for top sprinters.

Or making a car go from 100 miles/hour to 200 miles/hour vs. 500 miles/hour vs. 1000 miles/hour.

This is nothing surprising...

Of 100%, 20% are tech-savy buyers who were positively "disgusted" with the iPad and its "limitations", so Apple's drop to 73% during Q3 was not surprising.

Then those 20% people went and bought the Galaxy Tab in Q4. 10% of them couldn't stand it and switched back to Apple.

Easy to see. Like I said in another thread, some people just can't stomach the stuffs Apple spouts, then they have to shove it back in after seeing what others spouted.

Android will not be a viable competitor until it stabilizes and improves, and more inexpensive tablets appear. Apple already has the "high end"; going after it as still higher-end is not likely to be successful, although it might work for some niches. However the Android platform is still a ways off from the maturity needed for that proposition. The low end however has plenty of volume potential, and even some ability to handle bugs and other limitations for significant cost savings. An officially-supported tablet Android OS is a new beginning, but it remains to be more broadly adopted by low end devices.

None of these other competitors will come close to matching Apple until they can come up with a price model that makes sense. Right now Apple dominates this segment with both brand and price. Sure, one can argue that a tablet such as the Xoom is cheaper but it's not cheap enough to overcome the name 'iPad' with the name 'Xoom'.

It's unfair to state it's a 'huge drop' as if it wasn't going to happen. Apple kick started the 'modern tablet' market, so had the entire market to themselves, with all of it to lose to competition. The drop, when it came, was always going to appear huge when compared to mature markets.

I still think windows 8 could be a big player in the tablet market next year. Not so sure about the playbook though.

Apple iPad 2 to Destroy (Almost) All Comers in 2011, Analyst Says

By Ian Paul, PCWorld Mar 11, 2011 8:45 AM

Pricey Apple iPad challengers, including the Motorola Xoom, Blackberry PlayBook, and HP TouchPad, will be crushed by the iPad 2 in 2011, according to Forrester market analyst Sarah Rotman Epps.

While these tablets may work as well as Apple's tablet, they simply can't match Apple's price or the level of customer service you get at the Apple Store when buying an iPad 2. "Compare the experience of walking into an Apple Store, where the iPad is front and center, to walking into a Verizon store where the Samsung Galaxy Tab is collecting dust at the back of the store and the sales reps don't quite know what to make of it," Epps says in a recent blog post.

Epps believes Apple will claim at least 80 percent of the U.S. consumer tablet market in 2011. IDC recently said the iPad owns about 73 percent of the worldwide tablet market (IDC and PC World are both owned by International Data Group).

Hope On The Horizon

But don't despair, iPad haters; hope remains that a champion may arise to save you from the tasteful simplicity of Apple, and that hero's name is Amazon. Epps argues that Amazon could be inspired to create a Linux-based rival to the iPad 2. The online bookseller may find Apple's recently instituted in-app subscription policy too onerous and could look to compete directly with the iPad instead. Amazon could also afford to sell a tablet at below or just above cost to compete with the iPad 2 and make up those costs in content sales, Epps says. Finally, the average tablet buyer is more likely to trust Amazon than a wireless carrier offering tablets such as the Xoom or Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1. Twenty-eight percent of people considering a tablet purchase would prefer to buy from Amazon, according to Forrester data. By comparison, only 11 percent say they are interested in buying from a carrier.

Pricing Showdown

It's a little hard to say for certain whether the iPad will dominate in price, but Apple's tablet is off to a strong start. Best Buy is currently selling the 32GB 3G + Wi-Fi Motorola Xoom for $800. The 32GB 3G + Wi-Fi iPad 2 costs $70 less at $730. That's no contest for Apple, but Motorola's CEO Sanjay Jha said in February that a $600 Wi-Fi only Xoom is coming. Apple's 32GB Wi-Fi only iPad 2 sells for the same price.

The iPad 2 may also have a fight on its hands with Research In Motion's Blackberry PlayBook if recent rumors are correct. In February, a screen shot surfaced that purportedly showed a 16GB PlayBook priced at $500 at Office Depot. The 16GB Wi-Fi only iPad 2 is also priced at $500. The downside is the PlayBook has only a 7-inch screen versus the iPad 2's 9.7-inch display. Pricing for the HP TouchPad and the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 have not been announced.

Apple Store vs. Big Box Stores

The claim that users prefer to have their hands held when buying an iPad at the Apple Store rather than buying a Xoom at a big box store is harder to verify. Forrester says it found that two-thirds of U.S. tech buyers prefer to get a new computer with solid tech support. Apple clearly has an advantage over its competition in this regard since Apple has a large chain of retail stores featuring tech support at the Genius Bar, as well as individual and group classes to help you learn how to use your new gadget.

But whether the Genius Bar is enough of a lure to keep you coming back to Apple rather than your local Best Buy or Wal-Mart is unclear.

It's not just Forrester that thinks the iPad 2 will be the dominant player this year. ChangeWave Research in February polled 3,100 people in the U.S. who were planning to buy a tablet in the next 90 days and found that 82 percent of them favored the iPad.

wow apple is going to pwn the competition. lol@ bolded

Well, Apple is projected to sell ~1,000,000 iPad 2s this weekend.

That should help them bump their market share number back up.
