Tablet PCs

I'm in the market for a good, solid, tablet pc. I would prefer a convertible, not a dedicated, unless the dedicated comes with a built in optical drive (or a modular bay where I can add a battery). Light weight and cost are a factor. The IBM X41 is a no, because of bad reviews (tech support and HDDs), and I hate the little red pointer. A bump case-option is a must.

fujitsu or toshiba are then next best, i prefer the toshiba myself, but the IBM is the best available. X61 will be even better.

I'm starting to look into this seriously as well, but I'm also seeing drawbacks on the X41. Anyone else want to chime in? I need to frequently diagram things for clients, and so the tablet would be really really nice. I also though, run several VM's for demo'ing software and such. The VM's mean that I need a tablet with at least 2 GB of RAM (prefer an option to use 4 GB) and also need a bigger than XGA resolution and at least an 80GB drive. If I'm hijacking the thread too much, let me know and I'll create a new one.

You're looking for pretty much the same thing as me. I want a good amount of RAM and a HDD, and also a nice display. I went to BB & CC and found that the Gateway Tablet was WAY too heavy to use...

The x-41 Tablet is an ultra portable, and due to that has some limitations depending on your point of view.

- 4200RPM only due to 1.8" hard drive
- 60gig only due to 1.8" hard drive
-1.5 gig max memory
-only 12" screen with 1024x768
- Pentium M
-Max 1.6 Ghz CPU

Some people don't see those as limitations.... It's a nice machine, and quite frankly some of the reported issues have long been resolved. ie; the bad batch of HD's the early models of the X41 shipped with.

But again, the X41 is built to be thin, light... not a power house. The battery capability/flexibility is awesome however.

How about the Toshiba? It has a 12.1" screen that will do 1400x1050 and has core duo. Is this a better buy if I'm looking to do VM work as well?

hey, wait for the toshiba r25. It's $1349 It comes with a gig of ram, 100GB HDD, Core Duo 1.66, and has a 14.1" 1440x900 screen.

Any ETA? I have almost the same exact laptop but it's obviously not a tablet. Would be nice to switch to that.
