I'm looking at getting a tablet with a detachable keyboard and one thing that annoys me is most of them have bluetooth keyboards, meaning the keyboard has to be charged separately. Since the keyboard is physically attached when in use, it should get it's power from the tablet part with a wired connection.

I believe the Surface is like that, but are there any others (Windows or Android).

I'm quite happy with my HP X2. I've got the 11 with the i5-4202Y. Keyboard has a second battery in it so run time is quite nice on it. Only complaint is that the keyboard isn't backlit and the space bar kinda sucks. Haven't bothered to take the space bar off though to see if it could be fixed.

There are some more "economic" Windows tablets that have detachable tablets, such as Unbranded tablet from Best Buy and Winbook W100 from Microcenter. The thing is that you will need to purchase the keyboard separate from the tablet itself so the final cost will be around $200 or so for both. There is another brand named Vulcan and it does have keyboard and tablet bundle. Last time saw Newegg had it for around $170 or so.

The best thing about these tablets are they pretty much are the cheaper feel of the Surface and while performance and screen might not match that of Surface, it is still good enough for stuffs, but depends on what your ned for the tablet is.

As for Android ones, Asus' Transformer series is the most famous for the detachable keyboard. There are fair amount of Android tablets do not have such ability to have one, but they can support wired keyboard via OTG.

Personally, that's why I went with the HP X2. It's got quite a bit more grunt than the cheaper tablets but it was almost $400 cheaper than the Surface Pro.

well, I got the Asus T100 as a "tinker" device because of the form factor (back then, no other competitors)

I kinda miss it when I'm using my main laptop (macbook air), because all the CPU stuff is behind main screen - keyboard never gets hot on my lap

OP: What kind of use will it be for? If it's light, I'd definitely go for the Asus T100 - it's by far the best of these Bay Trail detachables when it comes to battery life (10+ hours actual usage), and performance is the same across the board. I've got some experience with the Asus and the Lenovo Miix 2, and while the Miix is a far nicer tablet (better materials, less plasticky), its keyboard cover/sleeve is a hassle to attach and detach. It does have a FHD display, though.

Also, there is the T100 Chi coming some time soon, with a (presumably) nicer aluminium build and Cherry Trail on board.

I believe the T100 Chi's keyboard is bluetooth and connects wirelessly to the tablet. It just seems like it'd be annoying to have to charge both the keyboard and tablet separately.
