I recently met my cousin from Stockholm and we both decried the high cost of Mexican food in foreign countries as we passed by a place with $5 tacos.

I told him that in my CA city, they are around $1.50 and often $1 on Taco Tuesdays. He then said that Swedes traditionally eat their tacos on Friday. WTF is wrong with the Swedes? Taco Fridays doesn't have the same pizzazz as Taco Tuesdays and just sounds wrong.

So that I can prove his tradition is a heinous perversion, when did Taco Tuesdays start in the US?

Taco Tuesday was thought to have first been celebrated in the late 16th or early 17th century Norway. As a means of honoring and appeasing the ancient god "Täçq", who was said to enjoy "small bites", which usually meant a finger or a toe, or maybe an ear. Perhaps even a forearm or leg if he was getting back from a long trip and a good time raping virgins and was particularly hungry. It grew into something of a legend and a tradition, and that's how "Taco Tuesday" came about.

Actually Taco Tuesday originated with a small upstart company back in the 60`s I believe called Senor taco! It was at the time a small California fast food place that was competing with and kickingTaco Bell`s arse!!

Lots of places in LA with $5 tacos (everyday regular price). The ones that are worth it are using super legit tortillas and are basically composed dishes on tortillas.

A few years ago, street tacos were like $0.50. Now there are like $1.50-2, and go to $1 on Taco Tuesday. While it does suck that they cost more, those tacos are loaded, so like three of them make a hearty meal.

Wait a sec...you're in California & you've never had tacos al pastor with pineapple salsa?

To be honest, I've never heard of pineapple in tacos and I've lived almost my entire life in heavily Hispanic areas. It's new to me.

How come Californians don't like breakfast tacos? When I lived in LA people looked at me like I was nuts when I'd ask where to get breakfast tacos like we eat in Texas, so I'd just have to make my own. Nothing like some machacado, carne guisada, chilaquiles, chorizo and potato, barbacoa, or just bean and cheese in flour tortilla covered in either green sauce or arbol+pequin+tomatillo salsa in the morning.

I dunno, I have had dozens or maybe hundreds of breakfast burritos, but never a breakfast taco. And I never heard of Taco Friday, either. But then again I though Taco Tuesday was invented by whitey, because I never heard of it while growing up in San Fernando Valley.

The sweet corn isn't so weird. One of my favorite Mexican delicacy tacos is huitlacoche plus green sauce (eg serrano plus tomatillo) in a corn tortilla.

What the hell is that? Fungus?

I guess it is a diseased ear of corn. " it’s a plant disease that grows on ears of corn around the kernels in puffy, gray clouds that look kind of like river stones."

I ain't eating that crap. Around here we throw that out when it gets diseased.

It is specific to al pastor tacos on a trompo.

That's like saying not to eat mushrooms. It's delicious, but sadly expensive since it has to be imported from Mexico.
