Then you'll find "Trinity and Beyond: The Atomic Bomb Movie" even more interesting. That clip is in the movie.

Yeah that's an interesting video. Seeing videos from the Atols, and how ridiculously large the explosion is compared to the ships, cruisers, etc. is frightening.

I remember having a dream (nightmare really) shortly after 9/11, about watching the Fireworks at Summerfest in Milwaukee from way out on a boat in Lake Michigan. Then BAM, mushroom cloud engulfs the whole downtown area...and I actually, physically had the worst, most sunken feeling in my stomach I've ever had in my life. I "slammed awake" in a cold sweat, still with that sunken feeling. I couldn't sleep the rest of that entire night.

...funny how the mere concept of something like this can affect a person so much. Nuclear war....yeah, that's one of the very few things I might have a nightmare about.

i had a couple of dreams like that

was in highschool when a nuke detonated. got in the street and saw a huge mushroom cloud in the distance. it was so vivid...

also a dream where a couple of lights hit a building then the whole streets filled up with some kinda gas... chemical missles? pretty scary and vivid too

huh, so do the guys standing around not worry about fallout and stuff or was that before they figured it out?

Wonder what size cannon that was? I know they had nuke rounds for the 16" naval rifles on the Iowa class battleships, but that one didn't look that large.

I remember a history channel show that mentioned these, they were pretty cool. Sounded like they were too slow though. The enemy would know where you were before you had a chance to set up. They were however an effective deterrant. With something like a 20 mile range...enough to stay away from the radiation if the wind wasn't blowing your way I guess.

I was thinking that too. It?s a tad far from the mushroom cloud, but I?ve seen it in other nuke vids as well.

They're used to help measure air currents near the explosion (I learned this watching those atomic bomb test videos from netflix). They launch a bunch of rockets just before the explosion.

I remember seeing the artillery piece on the History channel a few weeks ago. They called in "atomic annie", and it was supposedly the army's way to say that they were still needed cause they could launch nukes if needed.

Unfortunately, the russians always knew where they were (they take at least 2 hours to set up I think), so they were never put into commission as a deterrent.

Seen it before, but still neat.

My personal favorite is the nuclear shells developed for the 16 inch guns on the Iowa class.

What is amazing is that something as complex as a nuke can keep it's structural integrity after being shot out of the cannon

Kinda like the one that can be dropped from a fighter at an altitude of 200ft.

These things were developed in the 50s/60s I think...a tactical nuclear artillery piece. AFAIK only like 5-10 were ever built before the army scrapped the project. For one thing, this canon took forever to set up (compared to a regular 105 or 155mm). And then the Russians paid so much attention to these things that they virtually always knew where the canons were postitioned...you know, pretty useless for a real war scenario. These canons had a cute little name too, but I forget what that is...

Edit: And this thing isn't really massively destructive...fairly sure it was much smaller than the hiroshima bomb.
