If you are actively passing someone then the natural course of events takes place. You eventually move out the way and the other person passes you.

If you are just sitting in the left lane "cuz eez fahsta" then courtesy is to let the faster guy go ahead when its safe for you to hop back into the non passing lane.

If you are in NY\NJ then there are other rules in place.
If person is talking on a cell phone and throwing his hands up...let the wiper fluid fly.

This is more than reasonable, especially in off hours. However, the volume of traffic on the roads during rush hour just really doesn't allow for one lane to be used exclusively as a "passing" lane. There's just a slow and a faster lane.

Just out of curiosity, while you're in the left lane following behind several other cars going 10-15 mph above the speed limit, what is the etiquette for someone who comes up behind you and flashes his lights repeatedly at you to get out of the way? Again, this assumes that the right hand lane is full of slower moving traffic. I've had it happen more than a few times, and I generally ignore them, sometimes causing tailgating, or angry attempts to pass on the right. Am I obligated to get out of his way? Or does the other driver simply need to have some patience and/or not do 25+ mph above the speed limit? I'll mention that I generally have no problem getting out of the way for faster drivers. But I think that at some point, you just have to go with the traffic flow. Rush hour in NY/NJ is just not going to give you Daytona 500 driving conditions.

Almost every left lane passing law on the books has exceptions for heavy traffic.

If possible, I'd get over, let them pass, and then get back into the left lane and continue passing.

Yeah, if a person is doing that in rush hour traffic, he is a sociopath.
Best to get out of his way.

I don't brake checkk, I just slow down to he speed of the person on my right.

Then again, I have been in a rush before (dog got badly hurt and had to go to emergency vet). So sometimes I remember that and just let the ass hole by. 99% of the time they are assholes but 1% of the time they have a reason to be in a rush.

The bigger problem in alot of states is the lack of cops shooting radar.

I speed.
I sometimes crazy speed.

I'm constantly in and out of the left lane passing people.
Some asshole behind me decides to speed faster than me then I'll move over. No big deal. Awesome actually because then I can use them to draw out police and serve as a decoy. I love to let fast people pass me. they get the ticket.

This for me.

I have a 100 mile commute and generally only 2, 3 people get past me. Often, sometimes nobody.

But I love it when they do. I get the hell over, let them pass, and pace their speed with them way up front somewhere in sight and use them as a shield. Much love for these people.

Cut down on speeding and you cut down on aggressive driving.

Don't believe me, go to the Adirondack park in New York. Everyone is relaxed driving around there. Because if you are not relaxed, you will get a speeding ticket.

good thing you don't live in Ontario.

that'd be a ticket.

Do that to me in Illinois and I'll call the police and give them dash cam footage of your crime. I'll report that just like I'd report a drunk. You're going to cause an accident by driving so carelessly and there's a reason what you're doing is illegal.

Sticking the left lane at the same speed as the traffic to your right IS aggressive driving. Especially when you know you're doing it to obstruct traffic.

It's just as bad as sitting at a stop sign with people behind you and not moving. It's illegal, and you're a dick for doing so.

Also, you're not a cop. It's not your job nor are you authorized to police the speed of traffic.

Tailgating is retarded.. break checking is equally retarded.

Break checking is in my states DMV manual on how to deal with tailgating, it specifically states to tap your breaks a few times to let them know you think they are too close.

I've flashed my break lights as you describe before, but don't actually apply the breaks (so no deceleration). To me at least, that's different than what I think of as break checking which does have deceleration (which is the dangerous issue)

This is now the most useless thread of all the threads in AT.

Turns out BOTH tailgating AND brake checking are dangerous and stupid. Who knew?

You make a really good point and honestly that thought has never occurred to me. Thank you for that contribution. I'll keep that in mind next time I see that on the freeway.

That's NOT the same as brake checking. That's activating your tail lights to send a message that you'd like them to back off. Brake checking is slamming on the brakes to shove your cars ass in their face to send a message and scare them.

BTW - in many states, brake checking is illegal and is considered assault. Example https://jimcorleylaw.wordpress.com/...inal-charge-prevent-accident-injury-recovery/

wordpress is a valid source in legal arguments. I read it once on a wordpress site.

tapping breaks neq brake checking, imho. Brake checking is slamming on your brakes to slow down abruptly and scare the following driver into thinking a collision is imminent.
