The Taiwanese cast about 13 million votes, the margin was 30k, and 300k votes were nullified. I would say that's FL close and only marginally less shady.

There appears to be an explantion for it.

Casting invalid ballots has become an instrument of the people, the spokesman of a group called Millions of Invalid Votes Project said while commenting on the unusually high number of invalid ballots in Saturday's presidential election.

"If we are not happy with the current authorities or the alternative provided, why should we be forced to make a decision?" group spokesman Cheng Tsun-chi said yesterday.

To bring attention to public discontent with the candidates in the election, the project and its partner the Alliance of Fairness and Justice, also known as the pan-purple alliance, encouraged voters to spoil their ballots in protest...

Supporters of the alliance were asked to spoil their ballots by stamping the photos of the candidates on the mouths to indicate disgust with the empty promises and corruption of both the pan-green and pan-blue camps.

Yeah, well when someone shot the president friday, I sort of knew it would happen this way. But the real winners are the Gambling houses who won big time when everyone had bet that the president would lose. They probably won billions, in Taiwan money that is.

I don't like what's going on over there.

Meanwhile, China is sitting in the corner laughing at the split Taiwan. Waiting for a chance to strike.

The KMT's argument is that the "faked" shooting led Taiwan's premier to declare a military emergency--canceling leave for some 200,000 troops who didn't get to vote. Blue supporters claim that they poll well among military professionals. But they neglect to say that most of the military are young, educated Taiwanese conscripts who generally vote for President Chen's party.

After reading that article, I can't believe the opposition would stoop so low. Instead of urging for calm, they turn into hate-mongers. The author sums it up nicely in his conclusion:

It is supremely ironic. In 1979, Taiwan's upper level KMT ministers--including minister of Communications Lien Chan and Government Information director James Soong--nodded in approval when young Taiwanese democracy activists were sentenced to eight years in prison for less than KMT leaders have done in the past two days. But times have changed. The democracy activists and defense attorneys of 25 years ago are now Taiwan's president Chen Shui-bian, vice president Annette Lu, Kaohsiung mayor Frank Hsieh , Examination Yuan president Yao Chia-wen, and labor minister Chen Chu. This time, KMT leaders countenance mob rule. But Taiwan has changed dramatically in the last quarter-century. It is unlikely that Drs. Lien and Soong will be court-martialed for their part in inciting this latest unrest, much less sentenced to prison.

It is a sign that democratic ideals have indeed taken hold in Taiwan if not in the KMT.

You don't like democracy in action? The US has a similiar split with Republicans and Democrats. It doesn't make the US weak.
