Seriously, it's not that the US is too "candy-ass" as you so eloquently put, it's simply a matter of the US not getting involved in another foreign problem that it shouldn't be. The only reason that the US even considers being on Taiwan's side is all of the FDI that went into there back in the day. In a couple of years, things will change, and we will see how "candy-ass" the US is.

It is more about money/power than anything else. If Taiwan was more economically powerful than China, the U.S., as well as all the other nation would interfere quite quickly.

China wants Taiwan's economic influence and has threatened to lob nukes at the US if the US gets involved. It is a very heated issue.

What I'd like to happen:
China just gives up on it.

What is most likely going to happen in the long run:
Taiwan is going to be China again.

Yup... it is pretty sad, but it is more likely true. Just hopefully, things won't get bloody. Taiwan has a lot invested in China too though, so that is staving off anything in the near future at least.

as for those who say Google and MS is trying to appease the chinese government, in order to do business with them, you will very well listen to those communists. you think they're in it for the greater good? they're in there for the money! they have eleventy billion people in there, a slice of the pie would mean $$$. they dont care about the people or how they're oppressed or if they get all the information on the web. on those corporate bigwigs' mind, china is a delicious piece of pie waiting to be carved up by companies but the knives are controled by something called the PRC government. If anything I think China is playing this right, Taiwan President is being a bitch always proclaiming independence when it serves NO PURPOSE but to start a friggin War which would very well even lead to WW3.

Think about it, if Taiwan gets their independence, Tibet will follow suit, China do not want to repeat the mistakes of USSR. I am not a communist, but dividing up a country will only serve to weaken everybody and cause needless deaths.
