Ugh, Taiwan beer. A not so pleasant memory of Taiwan.
I do remember going out occasionally in the middle of the night and getting microwave dumplings at like 4 in the morning at a 7-11. Doesn't sound like much but when you're really hungry...

Actually, Taiwan Beer wasn't that bad. I had a big ol' litre bottle of it w/ dinner last night. Tastes better than Bud or Miller. Read: Has flavor.

There are 7-11's on every corner! I thought that was funny. But I guess not since the Japanese bought the Southland Corp years ago.

Almost took a walk to one to buy a six pack of Taiwan Beer.

yes, it's similar to how people here thinks that bush stole the election.

7-11 is cool there, you can actually buy more edible food.

I don't know what it's like in other parts of the US, but in Florida, they sell sandwiches made by LSG Sky Chefs in Orlando and THEY ARE AWESOME!!!

ahh reading this thread reminds me so much of Taiwan. It's been 8 years since I last visited. I still remember those night markets, the street vendor foods are the best, although they don't look very sanitizing. I always loved the games at the night markets, especially the one where you have to catch fishes with those paper films (don't know what it's called).

Ok. I just had dinner at Gyu Kaku and had Taiwan Draft Beer.

It was HORRIBLE. NOT the same as the Taiwan Beer I had with Dim Sum.

I switched to Orion. Much better beer.

Now I'm going to run to the 7-11 for a 6-pack before I upload my newest pics.

 Don't forget the microwave dumplings!!

I haven't been to Taiwan in over 10 years. I've been told that, like most things, some of it has changed dramatically, while other places are still exactly the same. By your comment about scooters, I see that hasn't changed at all.

Nice place. Mountains just shooting up out of the sea and very dark green. Temps are about 86 and it's sort of humid. Kind of like Florida in the spring.

I'm in dowtown Taipei right now. Sort of reminds me of Pittsburgh. Traffic's not too bad considering I just drove in through morning rush hour... except those scooters will swarm you like a bunch of gnats!

Not much Engrish. Everything is in English and Mandarin. Everyone in the airport and hotel greeted me in English. That right there makes it better than Miami. In Miami, the default language is Spanish.

The hotel room is different. I have a futon for a bed. It's about 8" off the ground. And in my fridge, there's some drink called "Pocari Sweat." Sweat, not Sweet. Doesn't sound too appetizing.

The scooters will swarm you in any of these Asia/Pacific nations.

The Taiwan Beer in the big dark glass bottle is good. The one in the white/blue cans is naaaaasty.
Enjoy the street vendor food while you're there

Orion is an Okinawan beer. Very tasty for an Asian brew. I was going to recommend that you look for it, but you found it already.

If I could ever afford the plane ticket, I'd like to check it out there. All the pictures I've seen are beautiful.

Oh how I miss Taiwan..i haven't been back in almost 10 years. If I save up enough money/vacation days next year to go back..i'm going to eat for daaaaays. I love being able to step out of your house at 2am and still find something yummy and delicious being sold on the street. Night markets = awesome...more yummy food, cheap things to buy and bargain for.... sigh..I originally wanted to save money for a dream trip to Japan but now I think i might give up all up for Taiwan. hehe.

What's funny, is I just walked back from a convenience store (not 7-11 or the Circle-K rip-off called "OK") and the only 6-packs they had were Heinekin, Corona, Busch and Kirin. Uggggh!!! Naturally, I went with the Kirin. What a disappointment!

I saw the dumplings, but I'm eating quite well with regular meals, so I've had no need for convenience store dumplings.
