It would be like holding the butt of a rifle against your forehead while shooting it. Probably comparable to being punched or having someone kick a soccer ball at your head.

The shape of the mask makes a difference too. Being at a steep angle would deflect bullets rather than stop them.

Actually it would be a lot more severe. A rifle would have the stock and firing mechanism to absorb most of the force before it ever reaches the user. A better analogy would be pressing your forehead, complete with facemask, to seal the firing chamber/lock the round. Then (somehow, because the firing pin would be blocked) fire the round.

For a practical comparison, a bullet that hits torso body armor often snaps ribs. How many punches or soccer balls snap ribs?

Meh, I've known lots of people who took rounds to armor plates. Mostly 7.62 from an AK. I've only heard of a .45 at point blank range as causing broken ribs.

based on it's sloped design, it's possible the spall wouldn't enter the eyesockets

but it could deflect it downwards into your chest or feet

This is hardly the best design someone could come up with if deflecting or obliterating bullets is what you want to do.

HOwever...A face shield like that would be very handy when someone is throwing large chunks or rocks directly at your face. they seem to help goalies in hockey very well

In a few years, this is what our regular law enforcement will look like.

Well...SWAT/Tactical teams CAN look pretty damn close already, even running up in an armored vehicle. These are special teams and on call only.

NOW, there are plenty of areas where people in charge outright REFUSE requests for the loss of dress shirts/pants...and I've seen areas where officers totally lost the uniform and wear BDU's and baseball caps.... meh

But in reality, it's totally impractical for every officer to be geared up to this level. How would you sit in a car? How could you calm or defuse a hostile situation that doesn't require any violence or threat of violence? How do people put a face to a badge? No way to connect with people when you are blacked out.

but..lets say you have a mentally ill guy with AR15, barricaded himself in a home...and called 911 saying "Im going to kill firefighters, police, come at me bro"

I dont think anyone would be against sending blacked out armored warriors into a situation like that, would they?

Shit...why not send a robot in there?

Here's the dillema...police need to figure out where the line is between service and respect to the community...

Police should always be a step above the threat...not always 5-10 steps above it.

Plates, sure. I doubt those face-masks are ceramic or steel.

MTek's face shields look cooler and they're designed to stop up to a 7,62x39mm round, your face is going to be busted up and you'll be in a world of hurt but you'll live. They're mostly meant for turret gunners and things like that, getting shot in the face isn't actually very high on the list of things grunts have to worry about.

Now if only they had enough to protect their own damn "country" so we could remove our troops.

What police looked like when I grew up:

What police look like now:

You are comparing apples to oranges here. You can't compare a specialized tactical officer's gear to that of a patrol officer. A better comparison would be this:

Average officer uniform from google search

A more "Tactical" officer uniform. In this case, "Tactical" means wearing a vest on the outside with extra pockets, and BDU style pants.

Some of these differences are purely cosmetic....sort of how like a rifle is either a "rifle" or a "assault rifle" when the differences between the two are purely cosmetic.

However, there can be a lot of community resistance to the changing of the regular patrol officer out of his pressed uniform and dress pants.

I have yet to see a regular police officer wearing a helmet, that was not involved in some type of riot control or building entry...if someone can find one please prove me wrong!

I think the fear really is that "building entry" SWAT tactics are used more and more, possibly for situations that don't really merit them.
