<< ok i gave in to temptation and got 1! i just coulnt resist any more. this is gonna be the most expensive remote ive ever had and maybe the newest toy! Hehe >>

I did too. I've got a $90 all in one AV producer 8 LCD remote, but the LCD is only one line, not touchscreen, and the remote is unreliable and flakey. Figured it was time for an upgrade. Still, be aware that you will almost definitely need to do some modifications (at the very least higher voltage batteries) to get the backlight working acceptably. A friend of mine's father has one of these, and I played with it for an hour or so. The backlighting and the scroll lag were the only problems I had with it.

Great for $100.

just buy a pronto! IR range is incredible, backlight is good customizable with your own icons etc. another $20 for the IR to X10 converter and you can do the lighting as well!

<< If you have a PalmOS device, just buy OmniRemote. . .been working great for me on all my handhelds (IIIxe, Vx, Visor Dlx). >>

You must sit awfully close to your TV, as the Palm device's IR's range is only like 3-4 ft. Sony's new Clie has an extended range IR with a built in remote app though---that might be cool.

For those of you wanting an awesome remote with learning and programming capibility with your PC, try and find a 15-1994 at your local RadioShack. Our shacks here each have 3-4 left at $19.95. Its discontinued and on sale, but you can get its replacement for around $40. Check out this site for more info Link. It can do most if not more than quite a few of these $100 remotes do. I am not saying its better, so don't start flaming, but I have this remote and controls all of my components. It does have to be hooked to a PC to unlock it potential though, and that requires building a $5 interface, VERY EASY to build though. Check it out, all the info needed and software is located at that site.

I think I'll check out the Sony and the Radio Shack $20 on before this one. Many reviews say the poor backlight is just to much for users of this TC1000 model. Good thread though, lots of good info!

Currently I have a Marantz 5000i which is equivalent to the Phillips Pronto. I've had both the Sony and that Take Control and I'd take the Take Control before I'd buy another Sony. Take Control allows you to have the ability to customize it more than the Sony. Great price!

Some users report that the range limitation and dim backlight problems were corrected on the JBL Take Control model. Most of the problems were reported on the original Harman Kardon model. I ordered one to replace my Marantz RC2000 MKII. I'll probably sell the Marantz.

I took the plunge! Looks like a great remote at a great deal!

As to higher voltage batteries to boost the backlight - any recommendations?

I'll second the RS 15-1994. I had a Pronto and actually got rid of it. Why? B/c there is no tactile feedback on a touchscreen. While I got used to it after a while, I would often find myself looking down and waiting a sec for the blacklight so I could fast forward or reverse my DVDs and TiVo, switch between modes, etc.

You can make a cable that plugs into the back of it so you can program with your computer (which is really pretty easy and very powerful.)

Beware, however, that the newer revision takes away some of the important hidden features, so I'd avoid it unless you just need a basic programmable/learning remote.

This seems like an interesting device...I'm curious as to whether this remote can be used to

1) run applications like Winamp (i'm assuming macros commands)

2) Replace my 8500DV remote for ATI Software(which i've just installed and have yet to fully utilize)

3) basically work as a mouse for my computer

I'd like to know where you read this, because I read through all the reviews on various sites and I never saw anyone mention this supposive fix on the JBL model. Do you have a link?

<< Looking at the design problems with this remote, the Sony AV-2100 looks to be better and cheaper: E-Cost AV-2100 >>

I have the Sony and I love it! Got it for my birthday from my dad about two years ago. It totally rocks! It controls everything, it's easy to program, and the backlight is plenty bright. I'm sure we must have replaced the batteries at some point, but I honestly can't remember doing it, and we use it every day. You do have to remember to shut it off when you're not using it, though.

the only problem I see is that the remote is not R/F.
I love th R/C remote that came with the ATI 8500DV. Is can basically walk around, be in my study and still FFD throught the CDs.
I remeber seeing a R/C remote that sony had out with like a 100ft range. waiting to get a hold of this!

Heheheh....depends on how sensitive your TV is. My Philips is pretty sensitive, so I could get about 3 or 4 feet out of it. On a smaller RC TV we had, it was only a few inches. Like I said...the Palm remote apps are pretty useless.
