I recently caught the film 'Taken', starring Liam Neeson, written by Luc Besson. I wasn't expecting much really. Well, for starters, the acting is actually pretty good, and Liam Neeson makes a surprisingly good turn in this. The supporting cast is decent enough as well.
Now, on to the surprise. The film looks like it will be a typical 'hero must find his kidnapped daughter movie', with a little bit of action, a lot of chasing around, and so on. Well, what we have here is something sort of a blend of ridiculous 80's action movies and a touch of the Bourne series. The biggest surprise is Liam Neeson's character. He's pretty obviously an ex-CIA black ops operator. He just takes people out, hardcore, over and over. The amount of brutality he releases is often exhilarating, if a bit far-fetched in some cases. He'll literally go into a building full of baddies and kill them all, no one left alive, unless he feels like torturing them first, then killing them later.
This movie is not to be taken too seriously, but I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a fun little brainless roller-coaster of a flick.
It's sort of like a quicker, less pretentious 'Man on Fire', with a Euro/Paris underworld backdrop.
7/10 just for a fun time.
