Texas is a big place, what part?

SW- you have rugged arid lands that are great for camping, hiking, and drug running from Mexico

Central- hill country, beautiful small towns mixed in with good beer and weird festivals

North panhandle- up on the high plains, no trees, but the Palo Duro Canyon is there!!!

Go to Austin
Tour state capital
Go to Texas State Museum (see an Imax film)
Shop on the drag
Eat at any resturant on 5th street (Saba BLue Water, Z-tejas)
Go to Zilker Park and swim at Barton Springs (its cold!!!)
Get a room at the Omni Downtown (look on the internet for cheap prices), check out the pool and hot tub on the roof

Go to Boerne
Get take out BBQ and eat it in the park on the River
Shop the little shops in downtown

More to come, maybe

Buy a Stuffed Armadillo.
If you see Roadkill of Armadillo's make sure you stuff a beer can while they're curled up. It gives the Armadillo a "drunk passed out look"

Ditto

Though I must admit I've never been there.

Nor would I want to for that matter.

Come to Oregon, bring your money, spend it, then GO HOME!!!!

san antonio has a lot of pre-colonial history... spanish missions etc... a great natural history museum and zoo... a sea world/theme park... the river walk... cinco de mayo...

just 1.5 hours south of Austin with great bars, the capitol, a nude beach, barton springs, not far from Enchanted Rock. also you can hit some awesom bbq joints in the hill country.

Waco (if you are passing through) has the Dr Pepper museum and the Lone Star Ranger Hall of Fame

FW has the stock yards, a good zoo, the flying saucer (beer), six flags, MLB baseball, amon carter museum,

dallas has excellent museums and good night life

Padre Island is nice but out of the way

west texas is beautiful but 12 hours away

Galvaston is alright

When in Austin, walk around UT campus.

You won't need viagra for the next month (if you ever needed it to begin with)

east texas has some nice roads for driving through... just you, the road, and trees. there are historical markers all over the place in east texas. if you come by austin, goto the oasis and eat dinner while watching sunset. also, there's this city (forget which one) that's has the only dr. pepper refinery in texas that makes it using sugarcane, supposed to be the best dr pepper ever. brenham has the bluebell factory. the part i enjoy about texas is the wide open deserted roads... makes for some fun driving.

If they are Alamo type folks, I suppose a trip to Fredricksburg may be an okay deal. There in San Antonio, we like Natural Bridge Caverns.

Corpus is a sewer. The weather these days is no good for South Padre.

I suppose the only thing of real value that I could tell you is that if you start heading down this way (towards Corpus) and you change your mind, don't try crossing the median to get over to northbound I-37. A lot of folks getting stuck these days.

Yes I am thinking of the Caverns. I have heard alot of the 6th street.
Whats the deal with South Padre ? I just can't find a freaking room in any hotels for this weekend. Anyway what about corpus ? Anyone know of any good places in Corpus ?

I would avoid South Padre and the like this time of year because of Spring Break. But that may be your thing.

Dallas/Ft Worth has lots of sporting events including the new American Airlines center (hockey, basketball) and the Ballpark in Arlington (baseball). Arlington also has a water park and Six flags in same area as baseball park. Dallas has excellent night life (west end, deep ellum). Fort Worth has stock yards and Amon Carter museum, which I think is nice. Dallas has some of the best restaraunts in the state.

Houston has Reliant park and Minute Maid park for sporting events. Plus they have plenty of good restaraunts with live bands.

About 90 minutes from Houston is Kima, which looks out onto the Gulf and has a nice boardwalk with restaurants and some games and rides. Galveston is ok, but the coast is typically dirty and the town is dilapidated.
