Taking advantage of the 7000 series demand?

I have a 7970 that got for about $220 after selling the game coupon and rebate. Would it be worthwhile to sell it on ebay for about $370 after fees and shipping and then switch to an nvidia card with that profit? If so, what would I get? Or, would I just be side-grading?

Sell, deal with onboard for a few weeks then buy R290 when availability allows.

Thanks, I thought about it, but didn't like the thought about waiting. But, that is the best option probably. r9 290's will go back to $400 though, right?

Once this current bubble pops, yes this will go back down. This happened back when bitcoin mining got real popular too, until asics took over and made GPU's worthless for mining bitcoins.

Not sure how long this bubble will last, but I do not expect it to be too long.

No one really knows if the 290 will go back to $400. If you aren't playing any games right now, go ahead and sell while the 7970 is worth a lot and wait. If the aftermarket 290s don't go back down to MSRP and you get sick of waiting, you can buy Nvidia then. Or see what other cards are out there at your ideal price point.

If you want to keep gaming after selling the 7970, the 770 is your best bet for a replacement.

Sell on forums or ebay and get a GTX 770 if you don't mind going the nvidia route.

I sold a Sapphire 7950 boost for 459 on Amazon last week. That's nearly 300 more than I paid for it. Turned around and got a GTX 780 Classified that overclocks to 1.25Ghz on the core and 7200Mhz memory. Needless to say - it was quite the upgrade!

I just purchased a 7970 Ghz in November and turned around and sold it for $450 shipped. I didn't want to wait, so I purchased a MSI TwinFrozr 780 which will be here tomorrow.

The prices right now are beyond bananas. Brother sold his ancient 6950s for enough bucks to get a new 770OC 4GB.

sold both 7970 back last December for a $100 loss on each card due to cross broke
perhaps
should had held on to it and sold it this December for break even instead.

until you sell your e-coins for real cash. it is only paper profit.
should had bought some e-coins when they were $20 each last year. then sell them a few week ago for $1000 each.

-----

sell it already. roller coaster is already on its way down.

price of 7900 is directly tied to e-coins.

reference is that e-coin is already on its way down from an all time high of $1000.

hope that clear up the confusion.

I'm curious as to what you are basing this on. A quick search on ebay shows that 7950's are still regularly selling for $350 or more.

I assume he means that bitcoin (and thus, litecoin as well, since the two are tied) prices have tanked significantly in the past week. Not surprising since China's gov't has basically stated Bitcoins are not a valid currency.

That does make sense. It doesn't look like the demand and prices on Radeons have decreased any yet, but I can definitely see how drop in cryptocoin value is a good indicator for the future.

Apparently there is now a third competing digital currency, feathercoin, which is based off of LiteCoin.

What are the specs of your present rig? {i.e. cpu, gpu, mb, psu}

Does it seem likely that eventually governments will step in and regulate this "industy"?

I don't really understand the value of bit coins, but even if you accept their value, basically everyone that is mining them is basically running their own business without any sort of government oversight.to me it seems like just printing your own money, but even if you accept them as a product like any manufactured good, one normally can not set up a business without some sort of regulation.

I also am assuming most people don't report whatever value (cash or goods) they get as income.

That's sort of the point of them.

First you have to wrap your hands around how to regulate it. You can't effectively ban it as a form of currency without also doing away with other foreign currency being used in the US.

You could regulate the exchanges, but I imagine most of them operate outside US jurisdiction.

Uncle Sam is going to have two issues with this, related. Cap gains and trackability. I imagine, once the dust settles were going to see regulated US exchanges, and a ban on exchanging through foreign exchanges enforced on the bank level a la internet gambling.

I have a reference 7970 I am thinking of selling also, and then buying a GTX780. I wanted to wait for a 290X with aftermarket cooling, but can't wait that long : ) I have a 6870 I can use in the meantime though. It almost seems foolish how much used cards are going for...

I think we missed the 7970 insane spike train. Have to wait for the next crypto price surge.

Put is on eBay with a buy it now price higher than you expect it to sell for, and just keep using it in the mean time. Let the market decide if you keep it or not.

Another thing to keep in mind is that if/when the bottom does fall out on cryptocoin mining with Radeons, your card will become almost worthless as the used market will get flooded with retired miners.

For me it was pretty much a no brainer to sell my 7950, although with all the R9 290's sold out or price gouged it's been tough finding a cost effective replacement. If you're willing to go for a GTX 780, now would probably be the time to dump the 7970.
