Are you referring to an External hard drive that you want to take out of its enclosure? In which case, these are usually just ordinary internal hard drives with a controller in the case. Once you remove it, it should behave like a regular internal hard drive.

Heya,

If the HDD you're referring to is an external drive, taking it out of the enclosure and then plugging it internally into a computer, it will be recognized by your OS based on whether or not it is FAT, FAT32, or NTFS (or other options). If it's already formatted as NTFS and has been used as such, it will function as a physical drive and will be assigned a drive letter. It will not appear as a removable disk or anything. It will appear in My Computer (or non-windows equivalent to that) as a physical hard drive with a drive letter assigned.

Very best,

Very best,

alright cool!
so basicly, assuming i have C as a windows partition and D as "the rest", installing the new 250gb's will add a E (assuming i didnt have any CD roms) with 250gbs? and when i insert the Windows vista CD ill get the same options as in XP installaion? to format drives C and D and starting a new one (C) - on which i will install windows?

the reason i want to do this is so i don't have 2 partitions anymore.

So you already have one internal drive partitioned as C (vista) & D (everything else) and you want to combine these into one partition?

Vista has tools for changing partition size or even combining partitions. What you need to do is move everything that is currently on the D partition onto your external (250GB) drive and remove it from the system. Next use the disk management tools in Vista to shrink the D partition to zero size (it will become unpartitioned space). Then simply expand the C partition to cover the unpartitioned space created in the previous step. Now you have one large C drive. Plug back in the external drive and it should be assigned the D letter. Then either copy everything onto the C drive or just use the external as the D drive.

Right, thank you.
but what i ment was, that the issue is that my hard drive is missing a cable, and im trying to understand what i need to do in order to use to directly (instead of buying a new cable cause apprently its a-bit old and not so easy to get)

and about what you said, i didn't know that's an option but i figured if im already doing that why not just format and have a semi fresh start (excluding all sorts of songs, documents etc..)

so in short - How do i hook up the HDD directly to the mother board?

So you have an external hard drive but you're missing the cable you need to connect it to the computer? What kind of cable does it use?

Better yet, why don't you give as much pertinent information about your computer as you have. (Motherboard, hard drive type, etc.)
