Yes.

You invite people to share in a celebration with you and then tell them that your carpet is more important to you than they are.

And if they'd be used to spitting in their houses, would you value their right to spit more than your own right to a clean house? If they come to your house they'll have to follow your house rules.
Extremely pretty ladies can be forgiven to break the rules once in a while.

I don't know how people are comfortable with sneakers and boots on inside their own homes...

yeah, but you're asian. they're "bai ren".

lol, only the chinese would get that. i get uncomfortable not taking off my shoes at anyone's home, so i always take it off.

Maybe they're not necessarily bai ren... maybe they're just wai guo ren.

Party Toes
  • When arriving at someone's home for a party, shower or gathering, it is presumed that you will wear your shoes into the home. This is because it is presumed you have dressed in festive attire from head to toe. Do be sure to do your best to wipe your shoes on both the outdoor and indoor mats to prevent tracking in unnecessary dirt.
Careful of Carpets
  • When you visit someone's home who is very particular about their carpets, and you are asked to remove your shoes, the host should also provide you with guest slippers.
Shoes Off, Please
  • ...when you invite someone over to your home, your primary responsibility as the host is to make guests feel welcome, rather than embarrassed or awkward...
The Home Front
  • Indeed, etiquette gurus say compliance is about the only option for guests.
"You do what they want," says Shawna Schuh, a business consultant in Gaston,
Ore. "And then you question whether you'll ever visit again." Experts debate
whether it's appropriate to impose shoelessness in the first place. Most say
it depends on the party (business functions, no; good friends, better).
Hosts can get away with religious or cultural reasons, they say, but
finickiness is questionable. "How do you tell someone your new carpet is
more important than they are?" says Ms. Schuh.

We don't wear shoes in our house (we're not asian) and we'd like our guests to do the same. If people don't want to that's fine but I think it's rude for the people to not remove their shoes when the house you're in requests it. We always ask our host what they prefer, it's just the curteous thing to do.

Only nasty dirty people wear shoes inside a house. It's gross and disrespectful.

I'm asian and I don't make people take shoes off in my house..hell half the time I'm lazy and don't take my shoes off in my house and half the time I do. I think the reason why I don't really give a sh1t is because everything my parents did that annoyed me when I was a kid such as driving really slow and making me always take my shoes off I've done the complete opposite...

What I don't get is people who get pissed or can't understand why people wear their shoes in their house and also why people get pissed when they're made to take their shoes off in someone else's house.

First of all, their house their rules. If I go into someone's house and I see them taking their shoes off I do so as well.

And no, you're not dirty or it's not nasty to wear your shoes in the house. It doesn't feel weird...in fact it's pretty comfortable and works great for when you're lazy and don't feel like taking them off.

As for the party thing it depends what stage of your life you're in. If you're 30 and having wine and cheese parties or dinner parties it makes plenty of sense for people to take their shoes off. If you're just like me just out of school and you have people over to preparty before going out or you've got a keg for the evening it's really weird having people walking around with their shoes off.

My feelings exactly. Whatever is house rules is fine with me. In fact, someone my friends I *never* let take their shoes off 'cause their feet smell so damn bad. *shudders*

From the "clean" point of view If my shoes are wet, or caked w/mud or something I'll always take them off even if the house I'm in doesn't have a "no shoes" policy.

Q for everyone citing health reasons as the source of the "no shoe" policy, do you wear surgical gloves outside of the home too? If not, how often do you wash your hands? How often do you disinfect your bathroom and everything in it (you know that flushing a toilet w/the lid up could cover anything in like a 10ft radius w/bacteria right)? I doubt the ground you walk on is much dirtier, in terms of bacteria and such, than everything you touch w/your hands on a daily basis.

If this was a party where people were getting dressed up and such I wouldn't ask them to take their shoes off because 1. I think it's just odd to see people dressed to the nine's but no wearing any shoes. 2. 80 shoes is a lot to keep up with (at least it would be in my apartment) and 3. Some people's clothes will drag on the ground if they don't have their shoes on. I guess to fix number 3 you just warn people ahead of time.

asian people just dont understand it i guess. i dunno i remember in college at ucla, well engineering is very very asian. (yeah that is an understatment haha)

anyhow i was with this engineering club, and we went to the alumni sponsor's house. well they were white, so when we got there there were like 15 of us, and everyone starts taking their shoes off. and the wife is like, what are you guys doing, its fine leave your shoes on. so i left my shoes on so there were 14 pairs of shoes there. like i think the thinking is, that if you invite someone to your house, you dont wanna make it seem like your carpet is more important than their comfort or having their feet exposed or them having to have their feet like and socks just on your floor. i am cool with it, i dont really care either way, i mean if i am just at someone's house for like 2 hours, i probably would just leave my shoes on and not have my smelly ass feet exposed for them to smell anyway. its not like i have dog poop all over my feet.

anyhow i went to some asians friend's places before, and forgot to take my shoes off. like i got so used to not taking my shoes off in college having live with non asians that i really dont think about it. so i get odd stares and eventually the "what the hell is wrong with you , are you white?" when people notice. yeah and then i take my shoes off it just slips my mind. its funny because im asian. and well i always figure... if i had guests over i'd let them make their own choice, since its whatever they are comfortable with. i mean i dont want poeple putting their shoes on my bed. but its the carpet. it snot like we eat off the carpet, or sleep on the carpet. besides it can be vacuumed . and its not like their shoes are wet.

You're both morons. Wearing shoes in your house makes no sense whether you have carpeting or wood floors. It keeps the house much cleaner.

As FreshPrince suggested, you could provide slippers for any guests who don't want to be shoeless.

Here's another question. I just got done playing 3 hours of basketball my feet are sweaty as hell. Would you rather have shoes on your carpet or someones sweaty socks?

Another question, what if the person has athlete's foot? Would you rather them walk around barefoot in your house or keep their shoes on?

Why is it such a big issue for people to just take off their shoes? At my place, we always take off our shoes and we vacuum the carpets once every two weeks -- and sometimes that's even excessive. I think we can get away with vacuuming once a week. Wiping your feet on the doormat does very little to help with the cleanliness.
