on second thought..40 people is quite a bit..if the parties that big over here, people end up having the party in their garages/yards..then just take off their shoes when they need to go in to use the bathroom...maybe this is an option?

It's not necessarily bad manners to ask your guest to remove their shoes at your house, maybe a little quirky for such a large group though! But what you do not want to do is just 'spring' it on your arriving guest the day/night of the party. Make sure your guest know ahead of time "no shoes in house" so they can plan ahead, wear nice socks, get a pedicure, wear the pantyhose that haven't burst through at the toe seam etc. Some people are just plain uncomfortable in their sock or bare feet, and they might want to bring along a pair of slippers or house shoes.

Or you could always just wash the carpets after the party and not worry about it, make it part of your wife's bday present.

That's a good idea, if it is not too late you may want to let everybody know about the no shoes policy so perhaps they could plan ahead for it and wear shoes more suitable for easier removal.

i know people who require that shoes be off at their houses, and it doesn't bother me to humor them, but we don't take them off in my house. if you have pets, there's no point, since they're tracking in stuff, too. we roll around on the floor with the pets but we're not getting Mad Restroom Urine Disease or anything.

Weird American thing. I've seen one family ever who lets people wear shoes in their house. Everyone thought they were grubby...even though they aren't really...its just isn't the norm up here in Canada.

before the party, draw a nice warm bath of oxyclean, febreze, and clorox. kick back and relax with a buffer drink.

good luck getting 40 people to take their shoes off and not offending some. maybe hand out some doctor slippers?

I think it is totally cool to ask them to obey the rules of your house. If they don't like it, tough, no one is making them stay there. Too bad the wife disagrees, not sure how to get around that one. Make her promise to scrub down the house after they leave maybe. That would not work with my wife but it is worth a try.

I didn't think the taking shoes off inside the house thing was just a Chinese thing lol. I don't find it disrespectful at all to ask people to take their shoes off. My friends usually ask me if they should hehe...so if your guests were respectful they would ask as well...if they don't, there's never anything wrong with you asking them.

I absolutely hate walking around without shoes on... no joke.

It bugs me terribly when a host makes me remove my shoes, almost to the point where I want leave the party. Not only does it make me uncomfortable, but I think it is rude, especially at a party.

Then again, I get extremely aggrevated when airport security makes me remove my shoes... they should at least provide a clean heated floor, and not the dirty tile that most airports have.

Of course guests should also have enough respect not to wear dirty shoes in the first place, and also wipe their feet (shoes) off when they enter your house.

I say you let the people decide because 40 is a lot! If they want to take it off then let them. If they dont, just forget about it. After the party, rent a nice carpet cleaner and clean the whole place. I know it might be a bit more work, but if you dont want this happning next time dont invite 40 people.

We also have carpet and no one wear shoes inside. But, where the hell are you going to keep 40 pairs of shoes with out getting them all mixed?

here in vancouver canada, I don't know of any households (asian or otherwise) that wear shoes inside the house. That's just nasty.

everyone has nice clean hardwood floors or carpet, and everyone is used to hanging out in socks when inside a home.

If you don't wanna take your shoes off, you can stay outside of my place.

Bah. I wouldn't have a floor in my house I can't walk on with shoes. It's like having a couch you can't sit on with pants.

put some old pieces of carpet near the doors,so people can wipe their shoes.

{Option} Rent a local hall to have your party;and then your super expensive carpet
wont get dirty. [like local volunteer Fire Dept ]

If i am going to a party,I do Not wear my work boots, but wear my clean shoes/sneaks.

I hope that your carpet is not white,
do you cringe if people sit on the couch?

We have carpet in our dorms.

Sometimes, there's literally a puddle of p!ss in the bathroom. I really don't want people stepping in that then walking into my room.

Ever hear of the Sandals Resorts??

I was a guest on the owners Yacht for a party and guess what??? It was requested that everyone remove their shoes before entering!!!! If he can do it I think you can also.

BTW, I never wear shoes in my home either. See if you can get some cheap paper slippers like they use in hospitals for the squeamism.

Your house, your rules. If the sh|tbags coming to the party don't want to take their shoes off, then make them chip in to clean the carpets when they all leave. Otherwise, tell them to turn the fvck around and take their happy asses home.

To those saying the OP is being anal about this, do think he would be anal to also ask his party guests not to piss in the corner, or not to sh|t all over the toilet seat? Suppose it is raining that day, and the streets are a mess and grimy. Should the OP allow these motherfvckers to come into his house and ruin his carpet just for the sake of not being anal?

Wait until you fvckers have a place of your own, then come back here and talk.

wearing shoes in someone's home is just rude. plain and simple.

im indian, my gf's not. her family wears shoes inside or doesnt have a "no shoe inside" policy as i see her and her sister walkin around with their shoes on inside. but i feel guilty if i dont take my shoes off at the front door. but my gf doesnt like shoes cluttering her front door. so i take my shoes off there and carry them to her room.

also, its so uncomfortable with shoes on inside. the feel of soft carpet underneath ur feet feels sooo good

Damn, that's a good rule. I'll have to try that one with the ladies.
