Taking someone to the airport. How far is too far for you?

Wife and I was asked by a cousin of hers to drop him off and pick him back up from the airport. The thing is it's 1.5 hrs there and that's with minimal traffic. So we're looking at 6 hrs for the whole ordeal for us. Got no choice now since she agreed but is angry at me cause I'm making a big deal about it.

greater than 2 hours round trip = you taking a livery service.

I agree, more than two hours round trip, he's taking Supershuttle. But the exception would be if this was going to be an extended vacation overseas (meaning he is out of country for more than 2 weeks), then I''d say more than 3 hours round trip he is taking alternative transportation. But this would be close family or a close friend, not some relative I maybe see once a year at Christmas.

Well it's family, so I would go 1.5hrs if I had to, but not if there's known to be traffic. Recommend Uber for sure after telling them it will be a long trip for you. Last I checked, the trip to the airport from here is about 45 minutes if w/o traffic @ $45. Good deal.

An hour is about my limit, but that depends on who is asking and departure time. For me, time of day is more important than length of drive. I live <15 minutes from the airport and I wouldn't ask anybody for a ride to make a 6am flight.

In your case though, it's family, what are you gonna do.

I would say it isn't the dropping off that is the problem, it is the picking them back up. Flight delays, etc. could turn a 3 hour round trip pickup into a 5 or 6 hour potential pickup. I've had it where the aircraft I was on landed on time but there was no open terminal slot. We ended up on the aircraft an additional 45 minutes waiting on a terminal slot to open up, then it took us another 15 minutes to get off the aircraft which was at a gate that was at a completely different terminal than what was originally planned. What a PITA.

"hey fam i'm callin you an uber. because you're fam, Uber Select and not Uber Pool"
Ns1 is probably right. It may be more advantageous for you to call and pay for an uber or SuperShuttle than it would be for you to waste your time and gas driving him to the airport. Plus you might score points with your wife.

It's about an hour and a half to the nearest airport from my house, more or less. I've gone to and from the airport many times - at least several dozen times, perhaps more - dropping off or fetching other people. As has my brother. And anyone else who has had an occasion to have someone else flying in or out. It's completely incomprehensible to me that we'd refuse. I'm not aware of even a single time when anyone's used public/hired transit to come this far from the airport.

Zero is my limit. I'll point out that we aren't broke students any more and that services like Uber are readily available.

It all depends on how much of a sponge they are. My brother-in-law flies in every Christmas from Atlanta, he wants us to always pick him up and drop him back off, and he expects to use one of our vehicles for his personal transportation needs while he is in town (visiting his friends, going out to clubs, etc). He'd always run the tank dry and never fill it up. I would always hold my tong, but it was my wife who was the one that finally got ticked off and told him not to expect chauffeur service, not to expect use of one of our cars, and for him to pick up a rental at the airport.

Uber is not always available though. They are banned in Vancouver, BC. I went to order a cab in the area and it was 190 bucks for a 1 hour ride to the airport

I'd pay that, because my last trip to the airport for a friend cost me $1500 in lost earnings for that night. It's just not worth it to me at this point in my life.

That is weird that they would charge that much. When we were vacationing in NY City, even though we were flying into/out of JFK, it was a fixed rate cab ride to/from the airport.

I suppose so. I've never had anyone be a dick like that. Though that may be a matter of situation, since my family has always had an extra vehicle that whomever could use. Though that hasn't happened often, and nobody's ever left the tank empty.

Why do you need to go? My wife knows there's no way I'd drive her family member 1.5 hrs and I wouldn't ask that of her either.
45 minutes would be the limit for me.
Should add if it was a emergency I would have no problem doing it.

What transportation alternatives does the cousin have?

He's driving to our place and leaving his car there. I think he'll be gone a week and a half or so. The burden is on us cause he doesn't want to pay for airport parking.

So are you driving him to the airport in his car or yours?

It takes me about an 1.5 hours to get to the airport from my house with no traffic, and it took me over 2.5 hours to get back home because of traffic and rain the last time I went. I never have my wife drive me to the airport. If I'm running short on time I'll drive myself and park at the terminal. Otherwise I take SuperShuttle there and back.

I'm the kind of person who doesn't like to inconvenience other people, and I expect the same from them. For instance, our 15 year old TV is going out. We've found a 65" Samsung at Costco for $749. We've measured and it will not fit in any of our vehicles. Rather than bother and ask for help from any friends with pickups, I'll go and rent a pickup from UHaul for $29 a day plus mileage instead.
