For me personally this has nothing to do with the religious aspect. It?s history, and history should be preserved, not all of it, like the bad stuff, but this is surely a remarkable peace of history, and it should be preserved.

The people who did this are some of the most religious in the world. Someone should desecrate their religious symbol and see how they like it.

Well, by our western culture it is wrong for us to condemn them for this action. While it is a great historical loss, it is in line with our own foundation and culture simply by the reason provided beyond the political bullshawgger. Even in the majority of our WESTERN/AMERICAN religions we find the tenet and teachings of Exodus Chapter 20:

3 "You shall have no other gods before me.
4 "You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below.
5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me,
6 but showing love to a thousand [generations] of those who love me and keep my commandments

This is a motivation and reasoning that we dare not question even as we attempt to reason within the reason of their actions. And no doubt, by the very chapter most religions are founded on (the ten commandments, common sense, and further our constitution) we cannot and should not hold opinion against them for this action.

And what about tolerance? In many countries you've got more than twenty different religions, but what the Taliban is doing now, is prohibiting other religions beside the Islam.
If we would follow the 'rules' of the bible, then intolerance would reign.

<< They misinterpret the prescription for no image of the divinity. This is what prompted the Muslims to destroy many icons in Sofia Haggia cathedral in Istambul 550 years ago. Buddha is not a divinity. He is revered, not worshipped.>>

I'm glad you brought this up, dennilfloss.

Buddha isn't a god, he's the one who founded Buddhism. Buddhists try to reach enlightment, just like Buddha.

But Buddha also told his followers that he didn't want any statues or images to be made of him. Therefore, as a Buddhist, I can not care much about those statues that were destroyed, although it wasn't the right thing to do since it are ancient statues with cultural value.

I have complete respect for religions, and I'll let anyone do their thing. But when it comes to widespread oppression of specific groups in the culture it exists in, something must be done. "It's been like this for centuries," some might say. It wasn't right back then, either. I equate this to the slavery that existed in America two centuries ago. Then it was ownership of slaves. Now, in Afghanistan, it's ownership of women. The US had other countries telling us it was wrong, but also had a huge population of those opposed to slavery within the same country. Over there the Taliban controls 90% of the country. There's no way a significant uprising could occur, let alone change a damn thing. These women (and most likeley a small portion of the men) need help. You say it's not our place to intervene. But I say it's our duty.

my understanding of what is happening over there concerning the destruction of buddhist statues:

In Islam, moslems are supposed to make provision for other religions. However the same provision is not provided to all religions. Christians and Jews living under Moslem rule must have their churches and synagogues (places of worship) protected, so long as the Jews and Christians keep their religion within their community and in 'private.' This provision is provided because Christians and Jews are all what moslems call 'people' of the book, meaning of the monotheistic religions that came from the same one God that Islam came from. HOWEVER; idol worship is something abhored by monotheisic religions such as Islam, Christianity, and Judaism. It is for this reason that when Mohammed gained control of Mekkah one of the first things he did was destroy all the idols that people had worshipped in the kaba at the time and at the time before he had taken Mekkah. It seems that the taliban of afghanistan are following this as a precedent. As to the differing opinions among local U.S. moslems or other moslems around the world concerning whether or not the destruction of these buddhas is mandated by Islam, certainly in Islam, as in other religions, there are differing interpretations.
It seems to me that if the buddhist statues served solely the purpose of being a piece of the rich history of humanity or the if the statue was not something worshipped but only the statue of a person revered and held in high esteem(which incidentally Islam frowns upon as a lesser form of idolatry), then perhaps this is where differing interpretations may come from.
I guess the taliban see the buddhist statues as idols that are still worshipped by touring visitors or by buddhists from their more remote locations.
Then the next question is... Islam is intolerant of religions other than the 3 monotheistic faiths?
yes, well thats at least what my moslem friend says. that according to his understanding (and now mine), idolatry, homosexuality, fornication, backbiting --- all these sinful acts --- can be practiced in privacy without public scrutiny nor public punishment.. simply no one would know about it (except God who provide judgement later, for those of you who believe he exists)since u are doing it privately..
in the case of these statues, they are (obviously) public statues.
as for whatever the hell else the taliban has done, like oppressing women and depriving them of education or of bare necessities, Islam does not allow it, but it seems that way too many moslems do.
It is important to know that so many things moslem people do, is not Islam. it is straight up old world culture.
what determines how a people act is all too often their culture and not their religion.

i guess thats all i have to say for now..hope you guys benefitted something from this long read cause it took a while for me to type it.
once again just my two cents---
i like everyone else need to learn more.. before i speak too much about the topic.

[edit] after rereading some of the earlier posts, i realize that dialogue about the subject is certainly much better than just saying "f!ck those taliban"

Nostradamus said the anti-Christ would come around the time of the Second Millenium after Christ (2000 AD) and that he would be an Arab wearing a blue turban...

Taliban leaders wear blue turbans (blue kerchiefs actually...)

These men are the scum of the Earth. They should all be shot and killed on sight, and it pisses me off that the UN cannot do this and that other Arab nations (who really are disgusted to share any bond with the Taliban) cannot do this as well. I did a report on the Taliban two years ago and I learned many, many facts that made me sick to my stomach. Yet even I never forsaw anything like this latest stunt...destroying some of the oldest relics of one of the world's most egalitarian, peace-loving religions is an act of evil in itself. I hope God reserves a special sort of hell for men like them.

One thing about the Taliban: there are moderates that exist. If any of you took the time to read the previous posts you'll find the explanation to what is going on with the statues. The destruction is to force the moderates to take a hardline stance. To not do so means death. Which is fine with the hardliners. Politics pure and simple.

why do we have the rights that we do?
because some woman some where stood up and said "you know what? thats not okay"
but if a woman there stands up for herself she is murdered.

i mean your logic is kinda screwy, well its okay to beat up woman, well its okay to kill innnocent people, well its okay to sell your daughters because thats just the way you do things.

in the same thinking it would be okay for murderers to come out and kill people cuz god told them too adn well thats just how they do things.

you are more upset about these statues than these poor women/children.

its about protecting the innocent.

*kat. <-- actually cares people.
