Windows 7 is probably the best MS desktop OS at the moment. 8.x is a disaster to use, and 10 is still too new and has some privacy issues.

Unless you are trying to do something that specifically wont work in 7, there is no reason to upgrade.

Works both ways ie "Unless you are trying to do something that specifically won't work in 10, there is no reason not to upgrade".

Privacy issues effect every Windows including Win7, end of the day it's not going to send NSA or FBI knocking at your door, you'll probably get more privacy issues leaving your house or using Android, Apple products.

I've been on Windows 7 ever since it came out and I have had absolutely no problems/qualms with it whatsoever. Now that Windows 10 is out, I'm debating switching to it.

What are the reasons why I should? Are there some must have brand new features? If not must haves, are there some cool or interesting features that I might like?

And what are the reasons why I shouldn't? Are there features/additions that make it inferior to Windows 7 (in your opinion)?

Key factors I'm looking for are performance and features - actually, those are probably the only things people actually care about haha. I know features are all very individual, but I've heard mixed reviews about Windows 10, especially with the privacy settings.

I decided against windows 10 upgrade because i do not think windows 10 is really going to be a free ride. Ask one question...why would a company like MS or any company for that matter give something for free when they could sell it and make money?? Call me paranoid or suspicious but, IMHO, is there an ulterior motive by MS. And If so what is it? So for myself I disabled any update related to the "win 10 upgrade". I am not in a rush and will wait and see.

Also AFAIK there hasn't been any further official clarification regarding "the supported lifetime of the device".

Their website states extended support to October 14, 2025,http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/lifecycle

Microsoft promises at least 10 years of support for Win10

Despite some confusion over statements made by Microsoft executive VP Terry Myerson at Windows 10's introduction, the new operating system does indeed have a support life cycle. The company's freshly updated life cycle schedule shows that WIndows 10 will enjoy the same ten-year support period as Redmond's previous operating systems, with a minimum of five years of mainstream support and five more years of extended support.
The dates don't exactly correspond with the July 29 release date, extending to October 13, 2020 for mainstream support and October 14, 2025 for extended support. Those dates are calculated using the date of general availability, which might be explained by Microsoft's plan to roll out Windows 10 upgrades over an extended period. Microsoft notes that these periods are only minimum guarantees, and support periods may be extended depending when (and if) another, newer OS is released.

that techreport article said:
There is one asterisk related to Windows 10 updates: the company says "a device may not be able to receive updates if the device hardware is incompatible, lacking current drivers, or otherwise outside of the Original Equipment Manufacturer’s ('OEM') support period."

Which means what exactly, perhaps the one year warranty?

What do Windows updates have to do with OEM support (ignoring drivers for a moment partly because that is not the primary purpose of WU)?

If MS said "sorry, we were talking complete rubbish when we mentioned the supported lifetime of the device, we actually mean x", then I would have a bit of confidence in their new official line, but two incompatible answers to the same question is not helpful. Perhaps it's entirely about drivers, who knows.

Surely if it only refers to the effects of lacking driver support, then wording along the lines of "Assuming that your device is connected to the Internet successfully, it will receive updates until x", would be a lot simpler and easy to understand.

The reason is probably that they can concentrate on Windows 10 mainly, resulting in a better maintained OS.

Bottom line Win7 is really a tweaked Vista(I liked Vista so not saying that is a bad thing) but offers nothing special ,you can argue about stability etc but as I've stated, I've had too many Operating Systems that were all solid and served me well over the years, even good old DOS 6.22 lol...
DOS was pretty good, I've enjoyed it (no multi-tasking though) and then we had a lot of shit systems like Win 9x (and many of its variants), thats when I switched from Windows to FreeBSD for the first time. Windows 2000 was the first OS Microsoft tried to change that dreadful Win 9x (DOS+GUI) with, an OS that didn't require multiple resets during the day, and re-installs during the week. It didn't get wide adoption though, due to poor drivers and lack of gaming support. Windows XP SP0 (which was just what Windows 7 is to Windows Vista) was quite buggy upon its release but after SP2 it got rock solid. Then Microsoft started to do incremental updates to the very same OS, changing one thing or another. So, here we are... Windows 10 now. Heh. Thrilled my ass D:

I still could be using Windows 3.1 I guess...
I haven't used that thing in over a decade. How has it aged? I know, I preferred DOS, and didn't use it much. Personally, wouldn't go as far back as Windows 2000, I know you can get at least a recent web browser for that. Heh.

Note: there are work-arounds for copying over & enable using Win7's in-built games onto Windows 10.
Yeah, I am just upset that Microsoft keeps juggling these things around every Windows release. They could make at least these things optional, re-installing them manually from Windows Add/Remove if anyone wants. They just like to create more work. Same with gadgets. People should be able to use them, if they want. It's like carrying a gun, okay it may not be safe, but some people still do. It's their choice.

If you can point me in the right direction over this one I'd appreciate it. I've been copying the games from XP to date
