Talk me out of buying a motorcycle

I've always wanted to have a motorcycle and I just found one I really like that's an extremely good buy. The problem? I have a four month old daughter and I couldn't imagine getting seriously hurt and compromising her not having a father in her life. I'm 28 years old and plan on having at least one more child in the next two years. Money is not an issue. We live in a suburban area and I would never take it on the highway, just around back roads and not do anything stupid.

Just need someone to talk some sense into me! The woman called me back and said she was on a camping trip and that 2 other people are coming over at 8 to look at it, which is when they are getting home. It is about $500 below what it could sell for, which is enticing. I really don't need one, but man oh man do I want one.

They don't make carseats for motorcycles.

That's why I sold my Harley; I'll get another one when the kids are older.

is your wife cool with it? because if youre just going to cruise now and again, and arent hurting for the money, and youre not going to get bitched at about it every time you go out, then get it and enjoy it.

It doesn't matter where you ride and it doesn't matter how you ride. Either you will make a mistake or a driver won't be paying attention and in any motorcycle vs X collisions the guy riding the bike always loses. It's not a question of "if" only "when" and "how bad". If you REALLY care about your daughter you won't ride on the streets. If you have a motorcycle itch and you have to scratch it get a dirt bike instead. You'll break an arm or a leg instead of your neck or your head.

1) People do not look when you're on a bike. It's like you're freaking invisible or it's some kind of a game where they want to pull out in front of you or merge into you.

2) That Ninja's got damage, and you can get a better deal on a non-damaged one. Wait.

3) One of my co-workers has been on bikes since he was a kid (he's like late-30s now). Best and most experienced rider that I know.

Last year, some chick pulled out in front of him at an intersection. She was going in the opposite direction and making a left turn. It was dark, he was on a relatively new SV650 and his dual headlight were lights were on; she just didn't see him and she was in a hurry to beat the cars behind him (she saw them but not him).

He hit her front fender and went flying over the hood. He rembers his shoes flying off and his feet above him as his body was twisting through the air. He landed toes first on the pavement. Broken toes, broken ankles, broken legs, amputated toes, two weeks in the hospital, and 4 months out of work. He still limps hard and he's still in physical therapy.

The ambulance folks cut all his clothes off and put them in paper bags. The ER folks gave the clothes to his gf and she took them home to his parents without thinking. His mother didn't sleep for days after opening the bag and seeing a pile or torn-up, bloody clothes.

Don't read this:

I've got a CRB600RR, and I love that bike. I love it. I don't ride it because it's safe. I ride it because it's fun. I don't act like an asshat on it. I have excellent medical insurance, and I have huge life insurance.

I'd just lie in bed all day if I were you. You might get killed crossing the street and then what would your kids do?

take the MSF course before you do any serious riding. that's a steal on a ninja250 though.

Dumbest response I've ever read on a forum. Seriously.

My brother died after he hit a moose with his motorcycle. That was 20 years ago. I still miss him.

Most accidents/deaths occur on backroads, disproportionately infact. These are the roads where few cops patrol, and people do 110 Km/h in a 70 Km/h zone.

Took me my first day of learning to ride to know shit happens. Shit happening minus 2500 lb cage doesn't feel good.

Funny you should mention that. I already own the fastest production quad ever. A 1988 Suzuki LT500r. 500cc 2-stroke. It scares the hell out of anyone that's ever ridden it, even friends that have souped up 4-stroke quads.

Hey you are the pussy who is afraid to ride. I'm just trying to push you to be afraid of more things. Live in fear if you want.

Riding on the highway is an order of magnitude safer than riding on surface streets or back roads. Think of it, steady state conditions with everyone traveling in the same direction and limited access from other vehicles/kids/deer/drunk Mexicans/etc.

If you ride that bike back and forth to work, you'll save enough money on gas to pay for your daughter's college education.

Oh wait... too late, you already said you made up your mind.
