It's dethroning the TV from the living room spot, moving the PC in.

Ah, a couch-gaming and movie-streaming sort of deal? sounds epic.

I was worried that you were planning to use it to play Starcraft 2 @ 1.5ft from your face.

Can you imagine trying to track objects moving across a 55" screen from 18" away?

I'm thinking 4-5 ft away without scaling but I can set it anywhere from Helen Keller to Clark Kent or 2ft-10ft. If I notice a big immersion difference in gaming at the sacrifice of readability in office/web usage, I'll compromise by scaling.

I'm hyped. Obviously it's a gamble, the payoff was so great with Catleap.

The fun part is that this is just a fraction of the 4K upgrade cost. Assuming the monitor doesn't have a defect or doesn't get damaged in transit, it will expose my video card at it's native resolution. Even if nv drivers can be hacked into treating freesync monitors as mobile gsync displays, nothing out there can handle 4K properly. 4K/60 needs one, possibly two as of yet unreleased flagship cards. Once I splurge on that, I will inevitably conclude that the 4790K can't keep up and I need to build a whole new system...

Let us know how this monitor works out! I'm interested and tempted to get one too. This would be my main display and my desk easily fit 3x24" in Eyefinity.

Will do. The seller has already sold 18 of the 55" model and hundreds of other models. I scanned the feedback for monitor purchases, I couldn't find a single negative one. I emailed them just after making the payment. If anyone decides to buy, I advise to ask them to inspect the unit, install firmware and set the language to English. Here is the seller's reply to my request:

Thank you for your purchase.

We shipped your monitor to you via UPS. The tracking number is

We checked the monitor before shipping it to you.

According to the pixel warranty, it allows up to 3 defective pixels.

And it is firmware updated and the English language is set.

If you find the firmware not updated after you connect the monitor to your PC, please let us know.

We will send you the drive to your email.

If you have any other questions please feel free to contact us.

Thank you.

I'm open to AMD cards but I won't grab one just for freesync.
I have a 980TI and I hear rumors about hacking drivers to trick them into identifying the monitor as a mobile g-sync display.

Tired of waiting. A true 4K solution will first arrive with DP 1.3 but I just can't wait anymore. Couch PC gaming with 4 people "sharing" screen after a nearly decade long break, last time it was a 720p projector.

My card obviously doesn't suffice but 2x1080TI should finally get a grip on 4K.
I'll consider the options once GP100/GP102 and Vega cards are out. If DP 1.3 panels start rolling out in 3 month
It wasn't a quick decision, I've been researching 4K monitors for years now. I narrowed it down to this beast vs. an amazing 31" 4096x2160. I have lots of flexibility with monitor placement and other factors such as reflections are also lining up. Couch gaming (not to be confused with gamepad gaming) is about to be a thing for me again, might complete it with the Lapdog should ergonomic issues come up.

I couch game or bedgame. I don't game at a desk anymore. It feels weird. I want to get that monitor and put it in my bedroom. I don't play much online anymore though although I have played overwatch in my bed, no mouse pad (memory foam helps keep the surface completely flat), and had a great time during the beta. Couldn't ever say I died because I was playing in bed. First time spending extended time with a shooter in awhile.

TRPGs are the worst though. I can get real relaxed and lose hours. Couch gaming is fun but you definitely need some type of way to make it comfortable. A lapdog is nice, and also one of these is great:

Pull it out when you're gaming, then it knocks down and stows away when you're done.

These are a little expensive but I think you'll like them:
http://iskelter.com/product-category/lap-desks/

Edit:I would either use wireless and use recharable batteries, or get a rug, run a usb cable under it for a usb hub, and then plug in a mouse/keyboard rwhen you're playing and then stow them away for tidiness if you have to.

I was looking forward to today but UPS:

It was out for delivery at 4:39 AM, I don't get why only at 10:23 PM did they realize "ummm, we are going to miss the scheduled delivery date".

On top of that, UPS wants to charge me $8 for a "delivery window" but only gives me one window to choose from and a evening one at that. Hate UPS...

Can't think of a better example for a 1st world problem. Still, Tuesday as the original delivery date would have been fine too. I actually took the remainder of the week anyway and I expected that date anyway. The day long tease of delivery and then concerns if the package has been lost until the very late reschedule info.

I live in a very safe area, never heard of any crime activity here in years. Sitting here and having taken time off work specifically for this purpose, I admit I was looking out the window every few minutes. Wow can the hours drag on when you wait for a package.

Netflix and nap the time away.

Until the surprise arrival! Hope it shows up and works out for you!

I've had UPS / FedEx do this more than once... pretty sure they just commit to a schedule they can't handle and don't have time to make the delivery.

I've always received it eventually though.

Don't expect a review, at least not this week, sorry guys. This unit was clearly damaged in transit, I'm thinking a drop from 10 ft+:

Oh man, that is the worst. Sorry about that. nothing like anticipating a delivery and then this showing up. Has to be UPS.

Maybe I'll get around to photos, but the only time this happened to me was around 3 years ago, I ordered some very spendy battery backup for the massive data server in our lab. UPS delivered them the next week, and one of the boxes was in pieces, all taped in various places. The other box was dented and torn in places, but otherwise fine.

Clearly, whatever UPS idiot tried to lift the first box on the sides, the heavy APC fell straight through and hit the floor. We were opening the box to inspect the damage, chuckling to ourselves, because the styrofoam padding had been broken into pieces and shoved all in one pile into the back of the box, the APC next to it, then the pieces of box wrapped around everything with a roll of tape to keep it all together.

They had wrapped it back up like a burrito.

Haha Z, I can actually visualize him doing just that then going "UPS" when APC broke through.

Yeah, definitely sucks. Cancel my previous 10ft drop estimate. Inside the box, here is the back view of the top left corner that got dented. The bubble wrap around box, the cardboard layers underneath and these Styrofoam blocks absorbed some of if it. Box must have had serious air time to still dent the frame the way it did:

So, a broken up review then :\

The bezels on this thing... It's definitely a looker, assuming the screen is of the non shattered variety. I still want one. The unit powered on, I obviously couldn't see much but I saw enough to conclude how a working unit would perform.

The plot thickens, they knew about it:

https://www.ups.com/content/us/en/resources/sri/07a_qvm.html

If you receive a message that your shipment has experienced an exception, then check the Shipment or Package Progress section in Tracking or Quantum View® Manage for details about changes in delivery schedule. An exception occurs when a package or shipment encounters an unforeseen event, which could result in a change to the expected delivery day. Examples of exception include: address unknown, damage to shipment, or signature not received.

I was thinking that was the additional delay in the tracking you posted ^

shit--we dropped this thing off a building...call it an " unusual exception," Carl and hold it for an additional day.

Posting an update and few observations since a few said they were interested.

You shouldn't be deterred by the incident with mine.

The return process is simple. Take pictures of monitor and packaging and wrap it back up. Forward the pics to seller, wait for lazy UPS to pick up the package. Notify seller whether to issue refund or send a replacement.

Stuck waiting for UPS but can't fault the seller for that.

A few tips for potential buyers:
When you place the order, ask them to use an extra layer of the bubble wrap. Some sellers will ship in crates. The power cable is very short, best have an alternative ready.

Didn't back from my decision. 4K opens up the possibility of using larger monitors that somewhat retain high PPI counts while offering screen sizes that demand increased view distance which in turn allows for couch gaming.
80 PPI doesn't sound impressive but you view it from 4ft+. My unit is obviously broken but it did power on so I got to gauge what the experience is like with a good unit.

I'm done with traditionally sized monitors. Even the 4K/144 incoming monitors don't deter me from this one. It will take an affordable 55" gsync variant to sway me and that won't happen for a while, in addition to that, 4K/60 is already a challenge, let alone 4K/100+.

That monitor viewing experience while leaned back on the couch... It's tough to make it work with a couch, ~4ft is the ideal view distance but there is some flexibility. I did make it work and it's why I insist I made the right decision.

It works just as well on a typical desk too, provided you have enough space on the desk (I barely did) and have a view distance of at least 3ft.

The couch is where it's at, the view distance feels right yet allows you to share the experience with others next to you.

If you need to return it'd be a bitch.

Well F You, Jojen . I didn't see this post until today now give me next week's powerball numbers.

This post is probably a better fit for the Love and Relationships sub-forum since I'm constantly getting jerked by UPS but get no satisfaction out of it.

After half a dozen phone calls and chat sessions with UPS:
They were aware of possible damage to monitor but would not tell me at which stage of transit it occurred or when they became aware of it.

The pick of the broken monitor was scheduled for Monday. Today is Thursday and judging by my tone in this post, you can already tell what's still sitting in my hallway.

I'll update the thread again once I have the replacement.

Yay for UPS! Lube up as best you can and tolerate the ride.
