Tape to Cd through Audigy - Possible?

A friend of mine is going on a trip soon and is taking along a disc man. Everything is great except he has some cassette tapes that he would like to transfer onto cd. He doesn't particularly care about sound quality because the tapes in question are to help him learn the language of the country and therefore just need to be listenable. I've never done anything like this and have no idea how to do it. I'm assuming I need to go in through the line in on my sound card, but am not quite sure exactly how to do it. If anyone has any ideas please let me know. I have a sound blaster audigy if that helps.

he should be able to run the output from the tape player to the input of the audigy, then just fire up your fav recording software.

Might need an RCA to headphone patchcord though.

That's what I thought. Excellent! I have an RCA to headphone patch as well. So will the recording software automatically recognize that their is a signal coming in through the input? And do you have any suggestions as to what recording software I should use?

I am actually doing exactly what you want to do RIGHT NOW! (I'm learning German language). And, I also have an Audigy. Here is what you need to do:
1. Connect your tape deck output RCA connectors to the "line in" jack on your Audigy. This will require an RCA (Red and White) --> 1/8" stereo jack. You could also go from the headphone output on your tape deck to the "line in" if you want to.

2. Download Goldwave sound editing software. It's shareware, but you can use it for a while free of charge (full functionality). It's interface is a little confusing at first, but is very powerful. You can easily edit out the "hiss" on the tape with this software.

3. After installing Goldwave, choose your input source from the "Device Controls" window settings, Device tab, as "SB Audigy Audio [A400]". Choose "New" and select the settings for your file (the "Voice" setting should be OK for language tapes), and set the length to slightly longer than the length of the tape. Start the tape at the beginning and then click the "Record" button on the Device Controls window. When the tape finishes, click the Stop button.

4. Save it and then you can edit it however you need to to clean up the sound.
