A friend of mine works for shurgard storage. It was recently bought out by public storage. The new company decided it doesnt want to do tax account on an individual basis and is deducting 25% flat from every single employees check telling them to get it back from the IRS at the end of the year.

Can this be legal?

Hmmm I dont think so, I think the IRS will want a little more of a structured system from them.

Of course I'm not a CPA, but we keep pretty detailed stuff on deductions, and there are forms and schedules to follow to keep it stright.

Yes, they have to pay taxes, social security, etc., on the money earned under the stolen social security number.

I don't think so. You get fined for not withholding enough (that I know).

Yup... they are paying wages under an assumed SS# so they have to report something back to the IRS. Out of laziness, they sometimes just deduct in the hopes that they won't have to deal with the IRS... and are the employees going to complain? Nope. Is an illegal going to complain that they lost part of their paycheck?

"Hi, I'm here illegally. I'd like to report a situation with my employer."

Not gonna happen. Maybe later, as the illegal situation continues to deteriorate, but not right now.

Ahh... Never knew that they go as far as getting fake SS# for illegals. Always thought they were just paid "peanuts" in cash
