The XP series has a faster FSB and has SMP enabled or something. That's what someone told me when I asked "SHould I get a T-Bird or XP" hehe

AthlonXP has a gadget called "hardware prefetch" which anticipates what it will need from memory and gets it ahead of time. This effectively speeds everything it does up by having more info ready for the processor when it needs it.

The real biggie is that AthlonXP supports Intel's SSE instructions. More and more programs are now optimised to work with SSE so the difference between a regular Athlon (Thunderbird code name) and AthlonXP (Palimino code name) can be very pronounced.

The truth is that either one will be more than sufficient for your needs. The AthlonXP is simply a better, more up to date processor.

Good luck in your buying decision.

The general rule of thumb that AMD has said is that an XP with a certain PR rating should score about the same as a Tbird at that real speed. Now, this will become less accurate the higher you go(1.53ghz 1800+ vs. Tbird 1.8ghz; who wins), but for a lower speed CPU like that, the XP should definately be faster in almost everything.

the Athlon 1600+ (1.4GHz) is barely higher than a Tbird 1.4GHz ... i dont see any reason to get a Tbird

and for the post about a faster FSB... not really both are 266 DDR

that is not true... their rating is to compare against P4s, not Tbirds.

The official reason?
The PR rating is based on a large set of benchmarks AMD has run on the chips, they call it a Performance Rating based on this set of real world tests.

Edit:
Get the XP..I have had 9 out of 11 1600's go to 1900 in the last week (the others went to 1800 PR)

uhohibrokeit, I'm just repeating what I read once in an AMD interview. I can't back it up, so either one of us very well could be right.

Hard to beleive that those smokin Thunderbirds are old school already. I would get the XP1600 as that will put you right in the sweet spot of price to performance. No real reason to settle for only 1500 when the 1600 is generally only a couple bucks more...

Wrongo bucko! the pr rating is a comparison of what a comparably performing tbird would have to be clocked at to achieve the same level of performance. This is according to AMD.

Nah, I don't buy that. They use PR to deceive 95% of general public...and use the above reason to deceive 5% computer freaks!
