Gonna be buying me one real soon, and want to overclock the bad boy 'till its feet are on fire. Looking to put it on an ASUS A7V mobo.

What's the most efffective cooling strategy? Don't want to get too weird with it, but figure there is something better than the retail H/S and fan. The Orbs seems to be getting some bad press, but what do I know?

All opinions appreciated!

if you have a 900 or higher T-bird retail, it comes iwth the Taisol CEK733092. This heatsink outperforms both orbs.

on the contrary, they get rave reviews but are truly among the lower echolong of performance as far as heatsinks goes. Poor testing methods do not reveal this.

If you do upgrade, make sure you "really" upgrade the heatsink. Do not go with any of hte orbs. Go with something like a taisol cgk742092(if you want someting quiet) or an alpha/globalwin unit.

The Globalwin FOP38 is the big boy on the block, very loud and powerful..if you want to oc a tbird, the fop38 will definatly do the job right..if noise level is a factor the fop32 is less noisy and still a very solid performer..

I'm using a FOP32-1 as well, but - I'm going WATER - just for the fun of it!

Seriously, the FOP32 should serve you very well.

I just got my fop38 today with artic silver. I paid like $3 extra for the artic silver and all I got was this little tiny pink thing with a dab of silver stuff in it. Is that all i'm supposed to get and will it be enough?

Riverhound,

"this little tiny pink thing" of ArCtic Silver should be enough for ONE application if you do it correctly...

Kind of expensive though...

I am useing a Taisol 742092 heatsink with a 92mm Panafo fan hooked to it. This works great and is quiet. T-bird 900 at 1030 1.8 volts. 26c at idle and 39c under heavy load.

Modded Alpha Pep66 (I took the shroud completely off, attached a 60mm fan, & increased the clamp pressure.)

2-80mm (exit) fans mounted 1.5in away from H/S, 60mm fan blowing across fins.

works really well. (1G T-bird @ 1.2, so far)

I've heard good things about the new Thermaltake volcano cooler... specifically the fan is supposed to be better than the fop38 in terms of performance _and_ noise. I was reading in the hardocp forums about a guy who mixed the volcano fan with the fop38 heatsink, and got even better performance.

Using a PAL6035 w/delta fan and Arctic Silver for now. I'll be swtiching to a pep66/85W peltier rig if I ever get around to finishing my waterproofing.

I'm not overclocking my Tbird 800 but I'm using a regular $16 Taisol hsf rated up to 1.1 ghz on AMD's recommended list and I don't go above 110 F in LA weather.

Usin the Taisol cgk742092, it makes more noise than I though it would, but then again whe I run my 90mm Panaflo, it drowns it out completely. I got a 1GHz@1.225, solid at 45C under full load. Never gotten an error in this speed with Win2K.

I have had and tried most of the more popular HSF's to date. (still try new ones when they come out if they interest me enough) I always went back to the Alpha 6035 with a Delta Black Label fan, but then obtained a used, good quality, lapped Hedgehog. Installed a Delta on it, and ended up #1 in my book so far. Does a great job cooling my 1.4 GHz T-Bird.

The one that I am waiting on, is the Kendon CPU Radiator. It will be very expensive, but the quality and design looks top notch. I have word that they will be in the States soon, after a distributor is decided upon.

Try the new Vantec cooler. I bought it for $25 shipped. Here. I think it is better than the FOP-38 since it has a bigger heatsink and an easier to mount clip. The same delta fan. 7000rpm. Try this and it's on sale.
