TDK `12x10x32 CDRW $180 after rebate (same as plextor)

Just a little more information to keep your head spinning...

There is a pretty thorough review of the TDK and Plextor 12/10/32 HERE.

One item of concern is that although both drives work with CloneCD, the TDK had problems reading subchannel data (ie. SecuROM protection) and had a little difficulty reading backups. Read it HERE. Not sure if it has been or can be corrected with a firmware update.

Other than that, the drives are practically identical - Plextor is just a stud!

I noticed in the review that the plextor had v1.04 and the TDK had the older v1.02 of the firmware so that may have acct'd for the minor differences..

btw...both Plextor and TDK have version 1.05 firmware on their websites for download...TDK and plextor seem to come out with identical firmware revision updates at about the same time (wonder why

If you have any questions about your rebate, call 1-800-835-8273. If you ask them they will mail the rebate to you at no cost. I called and got mine today. This should clear up any fears you all should have regarding "printed" rebate forms.

I'm no expert on this but subchannel data are usually included in CDs as a form of copy-protection since many CD drives are unable to correctly copy these hidden bits. I'm not sure that a firmware update solves this problem.

I've seen conflicting reports as to whether the TDK VeloCD can handle subchannel data. I understand the initial release of the Plextor drive (model &quot;a&quot does read subchannel data successfully, but the newer iteration does not (someone please correct me if I'm wrong on that---I would like to know!). I don't know if the TDK drive has two different firmware versions out there like the Plextor drive. The CloneCD website suggests that the TDK drive CAN read subchannel data, but they don't spell out if the drive they tested has a specific firmware iteration that makes that possible.

I suspect this will not be an issue for you unless you plan on copying things like Playstation games.

This is a problem that most Plextor TLA#202 drives seems to have. Our Plextor drive was the TLA#000 series and didn't have any such problem. You can't really blame TDK for this because if you buy a brand new Plextor model, which has TLA #202, you probably will not be able to read SubChannel data.

Yeah, subchannel data is mostly used in Playstation games and every odd game here or there (Diablo II).

That review is for the TDK Cyclone, which is the Euro version of the US VeloCD. I suspect this has the TLA#202 Plextor inside and the U.S. VeloCD has the TLA#000. CloneCD hardware spec sheet says it does read subchannel data.

Can anyone who has received this package verify that the rebate slip comes in the box from TDK? As was mentioned earlier, the fine print says &quot;original rebate form&quot; required. I checked to see if these were available from the local Circuit City, but they wouldn't even bother looking without a receipt. I can call the 800# listed above, but it would be nice if the slip came included.

Who's 16x10x40 is TDK going to rebadge?

They have a Retail channel rebate for $50 along with normal employee discount for the 12x10x32 and the 16x10x40 (says 16x comming soon)

The only 16x out right now is the yammy but it would seem silly if they used that since it has no burnproof and the slower 12 does.

same here Schmo. I printed the one off of circuit city, and i'm hoping that is good enough (I'm sure it is, my guess is that coupon is the sme thing that's supposed to come up after you set up the order on buy.com).

Update: I verified with TDK that the coupon printed on the circuitcity website is good to use when purchased off the buy.com site. They stressed make sure you follow procedures exactly...meaning properly filled out rebate form, circled item on the receipt/order confirmation emailed from buy.com...either one is ok, and the upc code cut out off of the box.

Doh, my drive was suppossed to be delivered today but UPS screwed up... go figure. Gotta love them. Through the HUB to the wrong distribution center and back to that same hub in a day. I should really quit my whining now.
