The Plextor is about the fastest drive out there (over a minute faster at burning an 8x DVD+R than the NEC 2500a) but only does 4x DVD-R....

Re the 2 meg buffer, that's what most have now. Plextor was one of the first with x8, and the first review I saw worried about the 2 megs, noting that getting another program going that demanded much at all dropped the buffer very low. So I shared, and share your worry, but in looking over what's coming out looks like 2 megs is the rule. Does buffer ram cost a lot more? Or is it hard to -- fumbles for tech-sounding term -- "address it" without running up costs?

I can just flash this with the newest firmware upgrade version 1.04 from plextor and my drive will then be recognized as a plextor correct?? This won't lead to any problems will it????

looks like i answered my own question.

To get V1.4 Either you A) have to edit the plextor firmware or B) download Tdk's version from their website

Well,

I checked my old emails and noticed that Staples did send a $30 off $150 expires 2/6/04. I also found a store that has it in stock.

This store was very picky. :| I bought just the printable coupon but they also want the email that came with it. WTF????? I had to make 2 trips for this. :|

I wonder if this is worth it since with NYC tax and after rebate, this purchase will come out to approx. $143 dollars.

mine came to $141.45 in the end... i guess its up to the individual... i like knowing im getting the quality of a Plextor drive and it is 8X so i think it is worth it! mine is on the truck for delivery today! woohoo! i hope my DVD player plays the +R DVDs so i can burn at 8X... if there comes available a bios upgrade to make this thing burn 8X -R DVDs then i will be super pleased!!
