Sounds good but I love my Plextor 708A! I've had bad experience with TDK CDRW drives (2 to be exact) so I won't go with them for DVD =\

I must say, Plextor has been updating their firmwares quickly, too. They are up to 1.03 now.

I just bought my 4x for not too long.... Maybe lower speed is better, so that I will burn less when the Discs are still relatively expensive.

actually, its being said that this drive is based off the Plextor 708A. the specs are identical, down to the buffer. and its not a huge surprise either, since the 4x TDK model used NEC's 1300A concept. so, it appears this drive is the Plextor 708A, just marked with the traditonal TDK attributes (TDK logo, shape and design of the front black bezel).

The Plextor 708A isn't a rebadged NEC drive it's build by Plextor using the same Sanyo clipset series that's used in the Optorite DD0203 (Sanyo BPDV2) 4x DVD+/-R/RW drive.

I had the TDK 4x +/- drive, it is hard to find disc that work on it. Funny thing is I was using a TDK DVD-RW on the drive using nero it give me error.

Looks like it's time to wait a little longer. With Optowrite coming out - prices should hopefully drop on all below the $200 mark. Or maybe Plextor will up the ante by adding Plexwrite...

i kno, sorry, shouldve been more clear in my post, the TDK 4x multi format (forget the model #) used NEC's concept i believe. not this TDK 8x multi format drive. it uses Plextor's model which was adapted from Sanyo's chipset.

That HP 400i 8x DVD+R is a single format drive, the TDK AID+840 and OptoRite DD0401 are dual format drives.

FYI: Add the Lite On LDW-811S 8x/4x DVD+/-R/RW drive ($199.99) to the list of new 8x DVD writers that will starting shipping soon.

It's nice that there's more 8x burners coming out, should start to drop the price on the 708A (which is down to $211 now).
I think I'm just gonna get a decent 4x burner to tide me over till the Dual Layer burners arrive in April next year along with the media.

I can't get the 708A to work with Ritek 4x dvd-r. It burns the dvd-r but my ps2 won't read it. If I use the same dvd-r with a pioneer 4x burner, the ps2 reads the disc. Anyone else have problems like this? The 708a has the latest firmware too.

There seems to be quite a few dual format drives having issues with -R disks.
Have you tried diff media ?
