Ok I've read the reviews, which seem to favor the plextor over the TDK, 2 reasons being reputation, and buggy tdk software. I'd like some "real world" opinions from those here who have used them.
(if this is the wrong forum Mod's my apologies, lock away)
regards,
Dave

From what I can gather, the TDK VeloCD 121032 is a rebadged Plextor drive (same mechanism, and that's all that really counts in the end). This drive tends to be about 10-20% cheaper than the Plextor model, so you can make your judgement from there. Both models are supported by CloneCD, which is good.

Don't worry about buggy TDK software, because it's likely that you'll never have to use it. Use CloneCD for copying discs and Nero for compilations. That seems to make the best combination for most people.

I have heard that the TDK can rip audio at 24x, which is outstanding. I am not sure if the Plextor can go that fast. If this is important for you, go TDK, otherwise do Plextor. I own a Plextor IDE burner and a SCSI reader, both are excellent.

I have ripped songs from the Plextor 12/10/32 at 22x...I could probably reach 24x if the CD's werent strached as bad

I think that it has been pretty much confirmed on these forums that the TDK VeloCD 12/10/32 is actually a rebadged Plextor 12/10/32A. The drive mechanism itself is the same; the only things different are the face plate and the tray mechanism.

Here's a post asking the same question that seems to clear things up.

Check out the new Plextor firmware:

PlexWriter 12/10/32A Firmware Upgrade Version 1.07 Download (File Size: 444k)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Date posted: November 27, 2000
Improved write performance and quality with Pioneer 8x CD-R media
Improved Digital Audio Extraction (reading Audio data from CD-DA discs) speed. Drive now capable of 32x maximum audio extraction.
Improved reading of CD-Text data on CD-Text Audio CDs.
Fixed a bug that occurred only on Mac systems when making an Audio CD. This did not occur with all WAV or AIFF files. This occurred only with certain files where the last set of data being sent to the drive by the software from the whole file was larger than 64kbytes. This resulted in an Audio track that contained folded over sound at the end of the track.
Fixed bug with some motherboards that intermittently did not detect the drive in the motherboard BIOS.

I just got the TDK over the plextor due to availability (I am not patient enough to mail order one item) and software included-a full version of Nero.
There is one huge thing I do not like about this TDK drive-the drive tray is some see-thru blue crap and is about a sturdy as saran wrap. I am very fearful I will be buying a new drive to to the tray falling apart rather than the optics going bad.
Cheers
Greg
