Facing a huge budget deficit when he took office in January, Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano did not impose a hiring freeze. He did not stop borrowing to subsidize some of the richest school districts in the country. He did not eliminate the Police Department’s beloved mounted unit.

Instead, Mr. Mangano, a Republican who won one of the first upsets of the Tea Party era, did what he had promised: He cut taxes, adding $40 million to the county’s deficit, which has since reached nearly $350 million.

Now, with its bonds suddenly downgraded and a state oversight agency preparing to seize its checkbook and credit cards, Nassau is on the verge of a full-fledged fiscal crisis.

Any Tea-Partiers want to defend this?

It seems to me that you need to pay off debts and cut spending BEFORE you reduce your income.

He did what he said he would do. I'm sure he didn't campaign on cutting services and paying off debts. The people got what they wanted. If only all politicians were so straight forward.

That sounds like a rather good idea.... Wait a minute, does that mean we can't have our free shit and/or expect the same level of service provided by the gov? If so, fuck that shit.

Ladies and Gents, I present exhibit A as to why we be fucked. We simply aren't willing to take the pain that is necessary to get our collective house in order. Taxing the rich won't solve shit on its own. Cutting spending won't solve shit on its own. Reducing the .mil won't solve shit on its own. Entitlement reform won't solve shit on its own. Lowering taxes makes the problem worse. Unfortunately damn near everyone is against at least one of those things and almost, if not all, must be done and will be done eventually. The only question is if we choose to do them or are forced.

The math isn't that hard and ya can't beat the math.

Mangano ran on the platform of cutting the 2.5% home heating oil tax. He won, and repealed the tax which was put in place by his predecessor Suozzi, who wasted the rainy day fund building a monstrosity of a County Executives building. Nassau County is in serious trouble before Mangano won, though he has not made any improvements.

What a damn stooge you are Nebor, yes your tea bagger did what he said he would do, but did your Tbagger have the damn brains to realize what his policies would result in when ole Nassau County goes from the verge of bankruptcy to the disaster full bankruptcy itself?

Pardon me Nebor, I would rather have the brains beforehand to know when some damn fool promises me easy street in exchange for my vote. If I only drink his Koolaid. To your blind belief that following any fool over the cliff is OK as long as he was honest in his belief of reality suspending stupidity.

And then said fool finds out to his own and everyone else's dismay, he promised more than he could deliver because reality itself can't be fooled.

I don't understand local level Tea Partiers. If I had a choice, I'd give my city/county all the money I give to the feds. At least the city/county provide me with valuable services. The feds provide little of value. Certainly nothing worth trillions of dollars.

Me, a tea bagger? I'm a big government authoritarian. My views don't really line up with the tea party.

Realistically, economy will never recover to the point where unemplyment is at 5%, or anywhere we could sustain ourselves to the point that we don't borrow more and more money. Simply jobs are not coming back, these unemployed will have to shift to do something else or remain unemployed forever. So the real question is what we need to do in this new reality. How do we repay debt? How do we keep paying unemployment benefits for that 10% (or more) so that they can survive? Should they start doing something (public service, involuntary labor) for that money, because they are not getting their jobs back.

This might appear unrelated to tea party, but it is all part of same problem - no politician or party will fix this problem, because they can't - we all have to step in.

Don't give me your crap, you just defended a Tbagger, and when called on it, rather than defending your initial position, you come up with another new version smokescreen.

Leading me to wonder what you stand for? If you don't have a consistent philosophy of wise public policy, you have nothing at all to offer yourself or anyone else on this forum.

The answer my friend is blowing in the wind seems to be the Nebor temporary all things to everyone pseudo appeal fallback position on this thread.

I really don't think I defended him. I pretty much just restated what the article said. Would you rather have a smart politician that wasn't honest, or an honest dunce that ran things into the ground? I think transparency in government is overrated, personally.

Also you seem to take this forum very seriously. As if you're arguing on the floor senate, or like it were your job.

I'm willing to give him some credit for being honest about what he is; and yes, this is pretty much the same thing Nebor said as the first response. Someone's views may be detestable, but honesty about their beliefs is refreshing.
