In case anyone cares, this particular Teac model is a rebadged Liteon 812s.

This is actually hot deal because the 812s can be modded into a 832s, getting DVD+R9 burning capability. The firewire/usb 2.0 enclosure is worth at least $25.

Where do you find the info on modding the 812s to an 832s? I just ordered one of these bad boys...great bonus with the enclosure too!

Just bought it, looks like this is hot. Liteon Burner, that can be flashed to a dual layer burner, with FIREWIRE. Great find!

Wow, that's my external drive case! I hate it! lol! I bought a Cendyne External DVD Burner and that was the case. I have since upgraded the drive in it (the original was only a DVD+R 2x drive) and it was a HUGE pain-in-the arse to get open! The way it locks into place is nice and secure...and very very difficult to get back open again. I started to open it using a screwdriver, then ending up using my finger nails and tearing the skin right under the nails to get it open. I have since cracked some of the tabs that hold it together.

I said to myself, "dang, this thing was never meant to be opened!!!!"

It's worked quite well though...just don't plan on opening it a lot unless you like having dings on the sides and pain under the nails.

double layer dvds(~9gb), but the blanks cost ~$10 each. most people are waiting for prices to eventually fall.

But as for performance it's ok?

Yes, once you get the drive installed into the "Fort Knox" case, it works well.

I have the same type of external case also. Not very well made at all. No directions included. The front section of mine keeps popping off because of the way the side tabs lock in place (or don't lock in my case). The drive I have in it also gets pretty darn hot if your doing multiple burns since there is no cooling fan. You also have to tuck the ide cable and 4-pin connector under the pcb to get the drive to slide all the way back in the thing. I would be upset if I had paid $25 but it's free, so go for it.

Hardware wise it should work, since Firewire is Apple Compatible. The problem you may run into is the drive may not be compatible with Apple's built-in burning software. I'm sure though if you get Roxio's Toast Titatinum 5 or 6 it would work just fine.

only 4 left when I got mine about 45mins ago. Posting so I can try out the firmware hacks posted here at a later time. I wanted external again so I can use as a backup device on multiple systems, otherwise it probably would be better to go with one of the newegg/zipzoomfly/etc oem duallayer drives for slightly more.
