So I'm traveling to Coeur D'Alene, Idaho next weekend and will be staying here and me and my friend thought that we might as well golf since they have a nice course. I've never golfed in my life so I need pointers/beginners tips. Thanks!

ROFL. You want a lesson? Stay the hell off the course until you learn what you're doing.

head down, knees bent, keep your eye on the ball. This will get a 300 yd drive right up the middle everytime.

Gotta learn sometime.

OP, what HAVE you done? Have you been to a driving range? Mini golf? Both of these are somewhat helpful. In fact I highly recommend going to a driving range before going out and playing.

though i agree with gaghalfrunt, just ignore the fact that he's a tactless, grumpy old codger.

if you've never golfed before, i don't suggest that a resort like coeur d'alene or any other 18 hole regulation course be the place to start. before you to a real course you really should have some basics down including some experience in hitting a ball straight and 100 yards forward, otherwise you'll just end up frustrated for 4 hours. you'll be incessantly looking for balls, digging chunks of sod up, and feeling pressured because of everyone behind you pushing you forward. it just wouldn't be fun.

I came in here to say this.

Please don't play on that course without having played before. You need to go the driving range at least 10-15 times before trying to play. Then try playing at a course that's not very good.

Just walk the course w/o the golf clubs because you'll have more fun that way.

You also need to learn proper golf etiquette before you get on the course. I assume you already have clubs and proper attire?

that course looks way too tough for a beginner. I agree with others that said it would not be fun for you. It would probably be a traumatizing experience and you would never want to play golf again.

edit: but if you do really want to play it, just don't take it seriously, and bring lots of balls. And at least go to a driving range and just try to hit the ball straight, keep your head down, don't try to crush the ball, etc.

Since its your first time, keep your head down and look at the ball. DO NOT SWING FOR THE FENCES.
Before you go to the 1st tee-box hit a bucket of balls at the driving range. And if you suck, do yourself, the people your group and the group behind you a favor and fake a shoulder injury.

Thanks for you guys with helpful comments.

Yes, I'm definitely thinking of going to the range this week and get some practice. If I don't have time though, it's no big deal. I'm not gonna play a serious game and just gonna go there to have fun.

I grew up in Spokane, and I was on my high school's golf team. There are a ton of great courses around Spokane that won't cost you an arm and a leg and would be much better environments for your first 18 hole golf outing.

Though not the best course in Spokane, Esmeralda Golf Course is a great course for beginners (we called it "Easy Ezzy"). MeadowWood and Liberty Lake golf courses are closer to Coeur d'Alene and are both somewhat less challenging than courses like Hangman, Indian Canyon or Qualchan.

That said, the CDA resort course isn't exceedingly challenging, although the landscaping grandeur makes it difficult to retrieve errant balls. If you do end up playing CDA, bring a ton of spare balls. Also, if they're still making their logo tees out of yew wood, take as many free ones as you can when you leave. They are nearly impossible to break with normal use and will last forever.

Good for you. When the dozens of groups of actual golfers you're holding up call the clubhouse to complain you can try that excuse on the marshall that's dragging your clueless ass off the course.

For what it's worth, the caddies do a pretty good job of keeping play moving with even the hackiest of golf hacks. Usually there's 2 caddies per foursome, and one will generally forecaddy to save you time tracking down your lost balls.

Still, I think the OP would have just as much fun at any of the other courses I mentioned, and he wouldn't have to drop $300.

Thanks I'll try not to make too much noise while they kick me out.
