Something like 70% of Americans that file returns (Basically, most with income < $150k/Year) should take the standard deduction - In yet most of them can't even figure that out and pay someone or a service to tell them that. You can blame dumb bitches like this that teach your kids

I don't disagree with you -- I have sat through some summer intro math/linear algebra courses I was getting out of the way with some ... less than ideal future teacher candidates. But a lot of the reason for that is the profession is disrespected (attitudes such as that conveyed in your post) and underpaid. Personally I've usually had excellent teachers, and some of the best were in their early-mid 20s.

Someday when I've built up enough wealth to do WTF I want I'll likely try my hand at trying to teach some little bastards some physics or mathematics.

PS. A lot of very smart engineers I know pay someone to do their taxes for them. It's not from a lack of intelligence, it's from an abundance of laziness. We are a lazy lot and if we can't write some code or come up with a theory or build a machine to do something for us we probably won't do it

As long as you report all your income, you will NEVER get in trouble with the IRS. Period. You get in trouble if you don't report income - which can happen easily if you forget to tell your accountant. It's not like knows about your capital gains and/or interest payments. Only other way would be questionable deductions/credits that you don't qualify for - and that is the only reason you would get an accountant is someone that professionally knows how/what qualifies for deductions.

BUT - If you don't even have enough deductions to get over the standard deduction, then there is no point in investigating. Your tax return is likely as complicated as putting your W2 Income on one line, subtracting the standard deduction, and putting the total tax owed minus amount of tax paid (through payroll). It literally takes 5 minutes of time at most.


When you say "tax expert lobby group", It's likely just the lines of software based solutions (TurboTax, H&R Block, etc...)

This is one of those "you know it's wrong but it really doesn't do as much harm as people make it out to cause" type things. Teenage boys getting to bang a teacher has been a fantasy since time began. For anyone that says "boys can be traumatized and taken advantage of too!", I'll counter with "What would be more traumatizing: growing up with the confidence that you're desireable to all women, or your most likely first sexual experience resulting in someone being incarcerated for many years and chastised for the rest of their life?"
