What do you guys think about professors who read visit their student's facebook pages, and in some cases, browse them to a fair degree of depth?

I personally find it very inappropriate, and a tad creepy

Adjust your privacy settings, dumbass.

Edit: What did you say about your prof?

Facebook pages are private by default. If you make it public, then no it's not inappropriate or creepy for someone to read it.

I think my default, anyone in your network can freely browse your facebook. I changed mine to only friends.

I always wonder what it is with insecure people who get pleasure and satistfaction by leaping to the first plausible opportunity to degrade someone else. It really shows loser-ness at an extreme level.

Anyway, your response and point is, not surprisingly, irrelevant to the OP. It's like my saying that someone stole something out of my apartment, but it's my fault for not installing secure enough anti-theft measures.

One should not need to make their profiles private to prevent professors from invading their Facebook pages. It is entirely irrelevant to a professor's job for him or her to delve into the social life of students. It's also, as stated, rather creepy.

Your apartment does not equal your facebook profile.

But if you want to use that analogy, a better example would be you hiding your fleshlight/20" dildo/porn/drugs when your family comes over to visit. Yes you have them, you might share with some friends or maybe a S.O., but you don't want EVERYONE to see - just a few.

Same with facebook. There are somethings you want to share with friends, and maybe not so much with family or colleagues.

If you are that worried then change your privacy settings. Otherwise, I can guarantee people much creepier than your prof have and will browse your profile.
Job interviewers are also starting to do google searches and facebook lookups of potential candidates now..

And I am like the cool teacher, like Mr. Handell. Mr. Handell would hang out with us and he would tell us awesome jokes and he actually hooked up with one of the students. And then like 12 other kids came forward.. it was in all the papers. Really ruined eighth grade for us.

I disagree with that. It's publicly accessible, but so is my bedroom window with a telescope if one is so inclined to put forth EFFORT to do so. It's not like student's profiles plop down on the professor's homepage, they have to make a point of searching out their students and browsing around their pages; it's inappropriate. I shouldn't have to hide my profile to keep profs from snooping into my personal life

so not the same.

all you have to do is click and you can read someone's personal info and see pictures they've chosen to make public.

the telescope through a bedroom window could get you arrested.

sure, no one likes to have certain things about themselves revealed to their parents, their minister, their teachers/professors. some things are private. so why not keep them private online too?

Your bedroom window is, and leads into, private property. Facebook and Myspace, pretty much any blog website that isn't on a personal server, is owned by the company. You agreed to the ToS which pretty much means that it's wide open to the public unless you make it private as per usage policy. When you have a Facebook or Myspace, or website in general, then a better analogy would be you filming a television show, getting it on the air, and then saying that it's creepy for your professor to watch it. Another analogy would be thinking it creepy that the professor looked up your phone number in the phone book.

It is no more creepy for your professor to view your facebook than it is for Joe the Plumber to view your facebook. They can both do it if you don't make it private. I personally don't put anything I'd feel upset about if anyone knew. No private information goes out on my facebook or myspace.

This isn't your bedroom window. It's a public forum that allows you a degree of control over your privacy. You are choosing not to use the tools they provide. You can't have both the publicity of a public profile and privacy. You can choose to either whisper to your friends or shout to the entire world. You've chosen not to keep your voice down.

That's not the case; in order to find someone's profile on FB, you need their first and last name, you have to type it in, and once you've found it, you then can start browsing around.

It's less invasive than setting up a telescope and peering through someone's window, but there are similarities in the sense that just because something is possible to view, doesn't mean it's appropriate to do so, particularly when one must expend effort to do so.
