Teaching Math through the years...........

Last week I was at a burger joint and purchased a burger for $1.58 w/tax. I handed the counter girl $2 and then found I had .08 in my pocket, which I then gave her. She just stood there holding the nickel and three pennies while staring at the screen on her register.

I sensed her discomfort and tried to tell her to just give me two quarters, but she called over the manager for help. While he tried to explain the transaction to her, she stood there complete bewildered.

Why this recounting of a simple transaction?

Because of the evolution in teaching math since the 1950's......

Teaching Math in 1950

A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is 4/5 of the price. What is his profit?

Teaching Math in 1960

A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is 4/5 of the price, or $80. What is his profit?

Teaching Math in 1970

A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is $80. Did he make a profit?

Teaching Math in 1980

A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is $80 and his profit is $20. Your assignment: Underline the number 20.

Teaching Math in 1990

A logger cuts down a beautiful forest because he is selfish and inconsiderate and cares nothing for the habitat of animals or the preservation of our woodlands. He does this so he can make a profit of $20. What do you think of this way of making a living? Topic for class participation after answering the question: How did the birds and squirrels feel as the logger cut down their homes? (There are no wrong answers.)

Un hachero vende una carretade de maderapara $100. El costo de la producciones es $80.

Kinda funny. But I'm now expecting the lecture about walking to school uphill both ways. In the snow. Barefoot.

So you are saying the cash register was poorly designed. She cannot just simply retype in the amount you gave her. What a horrible limitation on that cash register. It should be replaced. That new register will cost far less and last far longer than trying to teach math to countless morons.

PS, I did chuckle at your joke though.

8/10 for the joke.

basic arithmatic has been suffering over the ages. the only reason i'm better at basic math operations is because i got Brain Age, which uses basic arithmatic as a training game. I've actually gotten quite fast.

Please explain this fascinating statement. I need to know how the President of the US has become "the real problem with our educational system" in just 6 years time.

No Child Left Behind. it's trashing our school system. sure, it's a great idea in theory, but when it comes down to it... there are a lot of people who should be left behind.

You obviously have no idea what the hell you're talking about. NCLB may have some problems, that it certainly isn't that. Just because you know how to read a title doesn't mean you actually know what it is about.

So the hypothetical clerk's education in the original joke was ruined by an act that was not even in existence when she attended k-12? No school system is forced to abide by the terms of No Child Left Behind, they can choose to not take the Federal money and run their system however they see fit. Personally I would like to see DOE shutdown completely as public education is a matter best left to the states and local communities but if there has to be Federal money expended then I think it is entirely reasonable to set goals and standards to be met if a system chooses to take that money.
