are there any tips or guides on teaching someone how to drive? My g/f is 20 and has never even touched the steering wheel of a car. She doesn't know what a blinker is, takes a minute to think which is gas and which is break, etc. It isn't that she is stupid. Just, in Japan people don't drive. She never had to until recently.

I've been thinking about going over some basic car shit first. Maybe how the braking system works (in a nutshell of course), how the engine works, what this and that does, etc. I've always been of the opinion that knowing how something works allows you to use it better/safer.

Yes I know I can google 'teaching someone how to drive" but I was wondering if you guys had any techniques or advice.

thanks.

Get in car and have her drive around open parking lot at night. Can't get any easier than that. She probably won't be a good driver anyways since you said she's from Japan so don't worry about it if she sucks.

i wish i could keep her from driving, but I don't have much of a choice. She's moving back to her hometown where there aren't many trains, and thusly must drive.

I know she probably won't be a good driver since she won't drive much, has no exp, and is an asian woman , but Japan is fucking dangerous as hell. Just imagine a couple million of those old asian women on the road. very few people here know how to drive. I can't count the number of dumbasses a have to dodge on my daily commute.

My only problem is i don't have a car. Its too damned expensive here so i ride a motorcycle everywhere. I did manage to get her to promise not to buy a bike/scooter...one less thing I have to worry about

Remember to tell her to look down the road farther ahead than to look directly in front to keep her driving straight.

Also tell her to look around on occasion to reduce tunnel vision.

Sounds like she'll be one of those people that aim the car down the road rather than drive it.

lol harsh crowd

just make sure you express how you have to watch OTHER people driving as much as your paying attention to yourself driving.

you'd probably be better served sending her to driving school... or driver's ed. I attended the latter like many at 16 and they taught you a lot of things to look for that aren't necessarily common sense. Sort of like defensive driving.

There's a ball in the middle of the road. It is 300 yards in front of you, and you are traveling at 24MPH. There is a seven step process in this situation to avoid running a child over.

That's all driving school was to me. Oh, and videos of cars on fire and shit.

be patient....that is just about all the advice i can give.

The mistakes she makes while driving with you are making her better off in the long run.

hp giggles at the aspies

Send her to a driving school where she can learn how to drive properly. Despite what you may think, your driving habits suck.

Just get her a Hummer, she'll be safe and won't matter if she drives well or not.

Keep them away from decks. I crashed through the posts on my parents deck learning to drive.

Another vote for: Driving School

Seriously, you'll just Teach her your Bad Habits and miss a bunch of stuff every Driver should know.

That's going to be mighty hard teaching her how to drive when you just admitted you don't have a car, but good luck with that.

I'd recommend driving school, too. I think probably if you were going to be a good teacher for this you'd already know enough and be confident enough to not be asking on a forum how to do it. If I needed instruction in something that was potentially life-ending and my teacher-to-be didn't have a clue where to start off teaching, I have to say I'd want another one. That's just being realistic.

Go to the arcades for a couple of days and have her play some driving games. Tell her whenever she crashes, she dies. It's enough of a simulation that when she gets behind the wheel of a real car in the parking lot, she knows what the gas, brake, and steering wheel do.

Tip: First time she's in the car, have her practice maneuvering on level ground without stepping on the gas pedal. Teach her that a lot of driving involves coasting in gear.

(Assuming you're using an automatic tranny)

Pretty much what I would say. I taught my youngest brother to drive because my parents just didnt have the pacience to teach another kid to drive. First, I just had him watch me as we drove around for a bit. Then took him to a parking lot where he proceeded to almost burn out my clutch. After a few times doing this, I felt comfortable enought to let him out on quiet roads.

Personally, I say if you can, teach them with a MT.

Be smart, don't put yourself into a situation where YOU'RE going to have to be harsh on her. Instead let the driving school tell her that she's a menace to society.

My older brother taught me to drive, too, by virtue of seeing him for a couple of years before I turned 16. From him I learned how to do neutral drops, how to fade aground corners very unsafely, and how to speed whenever possible (which was all the time). Thanks, bro!
