Team based shooters question

Regardless of overall status as casual, hardcore realism or whatever, are there any shooter games besides Battlefield that have a squad mechanic similar to BF? ie, you see who is in your squad, can talk to them(oops don't have that for PC in BF3), can spawn on them, etc.

ANY multiplayer shooter that fits this can be a response - including upcoming releases. Mods count too.

Well, those two games are kinda inherently squad-based anyway, seeing as they're co-op shooters intended for small groups of 4 - 6 people.

The first thing that comes to my head is Red Orchestra and Red Orchestra 2. I believe Nuclear Dawn also has a squad system. Granted... I don't think the squad mechanics in either of those games are as useful or fleshed-out as Battlefield.

Come to think of it, I'm not sure of any game that emphasizes squads as much as Battlefield does.

I never played Planetside but I want to try PS2...and I looked up PS1 and saw it had squads...what exactly did squads allow in that game?

Enemy Territory: Quake Wars is one of my favorite FPS'es of all time. The game was a blast to play and you could setup fire-teams (squads). I felt like the game did a great job of encouraging players to work as a team by rewarding you for doing your class' job. Unfortunately, the last time I checked almost no one was playing the game.

Now Battlefield: Bad Company 2 is helping to fill the void that was created when I stopped playing QW.

Contrary to what people say, not liking BF3 doesn't have anything to do with being good or bad at it.

I'm actually half way decent, but it's hard to enjoy a game that threw out most of its core franchise gameplay out the window in order to attract the CoD-Kids.

This. And some people troll you and say "well just play BF2, it's still there".

If ArmA 3 was suddenly changed at its heart to compete with CoD, would ArmA players be happy to stick with ArmA 2 forever, knowing they will never receive another game?

Rinse and repeat that statement for any other franchise. Many franchises are only saved from this happening by vastness of the differences between their game and CoD.
