Team Fortress 2 - help (I don't know what to do...!!)

I (finally) finished downloaded TF2 and tired it out. I'm just lost. Is there any tutorial or group for beginners ?

I consider myself competent with playing single-player games (having finished, HL, Resistance, DeusEx,... etc). And I've played some LAN matches with friends (Red Alert 2, Warcraft3 .. etc).

But this is the first time I'm playing online, and I just don't know what to do. I just clicked "Play" for the first map I saw and I joined the Blue team. I selected "medic" and went around following some of the other players, but I died too often. I nearly charged a heavy, but then got stabbed in the back by a spy I then changed to a soilder, but didn't even last 5 mins. (Kept getting killed by a demoman)

Considering all I hear about this game, I really want to give it a shot, but ... well, I'm just lost. HELP !?!

Hey, I feel you pain. Getting backstabbed over and over by spies is why I stopped playing around last summer. Getting head-shotted in mid air didn't help either. Anway, I'm also trying to get back into the game, for whatever reason. All I can say is, don't give up yet, the chances are that you'll catch on. GL.

TF2 took me a lot longer than most games to get decent at. It just takes practice. Get to know the maps, what to watch for to keep yourself from getting backstabbed, etc.

Be attentive. Focus your mind. TF2 is a fun game once you get good at it. Keep at it and don't give up.

see if this helps Only sure thing is practice. Realize there are a few different type of maps: pushing carts, capping points and capture the flag. Just try your best to help the team do what it's supposed to, don't worry about your K ratio. If you can trade a life for a sentry, that helps more than the score shows.

Thanks JTsyo,

I'm going to look over that link. Hmm.. so just practise, eh? I'm game for it. ^_^

Does TF2 support audio in-game? i.e. to use headphones to talk to your team-mates? Do I need to do any special settings to enable it or something?

For that matter, do we have any AT-team fortress clans or the like?

Like many thinks in life mastery is not a given. Some things-piano, wine making , etc, requires years for basic aptitude.

TF2 just requires a little time and a lotta fun...

Shoot them. If they're the same color as you, shoot them once to make sure they're not a spy. If they aren't the same color as you, keep shooting til they stop moving. And if they're a spy, shoot randomly a couple of times, 'case they're dead ringers.

I found that playing Pyro or Medic to be the best beginner classes. Not that they are easy to master.. but they seem to be a little easier to get started with IMO. Pyro is fairly fast and you can be a bit sloppy.. hide around a few corners and cook some dudes. Follow other players on your team a bit.

Start with Pyro and just watch and learn while you play. Eventually you will get the hang of it and be able to move on to other classes.

I played this game for the first time today too. What's the deal with spies? They can impersonate someone on your team? Do they get that persons weapons or just their usual pistol and knife?

spy just use pistol and knife. backstab = instant dead unless ur ubered. can turn invisible or into the other team but can't fire weapon when doing that.

I hate Spys, people who are good with them are difficult to deal with lol. AS Keith said Pyro is the best class to start with. I still mostly play them. I suck ass at the spy, but people who are good with the spy are freaking deadly.

As you play, read the in-game tips during the loading screens. They're very helpful for a beginner. Basically they teach you what the classes do, tips, etc etc.

lasting 5 mins in TF2 is pretty good for anyone. its so fast paced that you will die often.

That's a good point. No one lasts forever. I consider myself a decent player and I'm like a 3 - 1 Kill death ratio on a normal good day. Just try a little more killing and less dying

Seriously Chrono, as others have said, start w/ Pyro or Soldier or Medic. Watch what others are doing, and don't trust anyone. You shoot your own team to make sure they're not spies. There are different maps as I'm sure you've gathered, control point, cart pushing, etc.

The AT server is located at this IP: 71.195.51.220

The game tracker for that server is here: http://www.gametracker.com/server_info/71.195.51.220:27015/

And then join the AT TF2 group: http://steamcommunity.com/groups/ATTF2

Add whomever you want as friends, check the IP above or just "join" whatever games other members are playing. I'm sure people will help you out. You can add me if you want: ericstin

I just started playing a few months ago. The best class for learning honestly is the Pyro. Just don't stand in the open. Hug walls and corners and just keep letting out little "bursts" of fire until you see someone burning, then go in for the kill. You can usually catch spies doing that invisible. Also cook team members (as spies can disguise themselves) with little bursts from time to time as they come across you.

The best thing as a pyro is if you are playing a capture point map and defending, just sit there around a dispenser (engineering thing that gives out health and ammo) and burst around their senteries and equipment. Spies are ALWAYS look to come up and zap them as that is their job. So if you just sit there as a pyro and burst out flame and keep your ammo full with the dispensers, you can literally cook 20 spies in a round and stay alive the entire time...

Pyro's are good defense and good offense (in certain situations)... Remember, the crazy guy that runs into battle 5 vs 1 is going to die, alot... I find it more beneficial to play more defensively than offensively as your chances for survival are alot higher and you can get many more points. The hard part about playing defensively is that spies get you from behind, which is why you play pyro to counteract that.

----

My favorite classes though are Demoman, Engineer, and Heavy.

If you play as medic, do not waste your time on poor players. You need to stick with a heavy or soldier or pyro who has a lot of kills and who is also looking out for you too. You will know a good player is a good player if they look after their medic. YOu were just getting killed alot b/c your heavy was not trying to protect you.

Also, if you have a poorly coordinated team, you are generally not going to fare well unless you are a great player. TF2 is a team game, not a solo game. If you are on a crappy team, play with a stronger class like soldier or demo or pyro- one that is not so dependent upon other players like a medic.

Just try out all the classes and see what you like. Also, there are good instructional videos on youtube if you want to do the searching. I think these are the good ones, can't be bothered to check them all: http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=D6397C3DF8FF0832

This game's tough on new players, you'll need to learn how to play each class so that you understand how to beat them. Spies gave me all sorts of trouble before I started playing as one, then I learned their strenghts and weaknesses and now I love it when there's a bunch enemy spies because I'll switch to Pyro and RUIN their day.

You might really like Engineer, the class is very forgiving and not that hard to play once you get the basics down. There's always something to do since people will be hell bent on destroying your sentries and health stations.

But yeah, for just running around and having fun I usually go Pyro. Remember you can use the air-blast to re-direct an enemy Soldier's rocket right back at them. Use alt-fire. Very useful, just make sure to pick up the ammo off his dead body because the airblast chews up ammo quick.

Also I recommend avoiding the map 2fort for now, just because it's a bit of a chokepoint grindfest at times with too much camping or one team just flat out dominating.

TF2 is an easy game to master, especially if you've played TFC or Quake.

I just started playing a few months ago. The best class for learning honestly is the Pyro.

LOL, no. It's a utility class that anyone can play. Playing pyro requires the least amount of skill/playing time to master.
