Greetings everyone.

I was away for 2 weeks in Florida visting my Dad who underwent cancer surgery.

Below is an E-mail I was asked to post job info. Thanks go to Nathan for asking me to post the info even though he is not an active member of the website for whatever reason I am not aware of. There is a saying among Firefighters "Once a Firefighter always a Firefighter". The comraderie of this online Community reminds me of this "Once a an AT Member always a AT Member", whether active or not just like Firemen which I was one when I lived in New York.

Also thanks to all who have continued to post job info.

Prayers to all serving Military both U.S. and friends in their efforts to rid the world of Terroristic A-holes. Kick A$$ !!!

Dave

Beware! This website (or, company) scans your HotJobs and/or Monster.com resumes and will send you an email asking if you want job postings emailed to you. They will email job listings, but to access them you must pay a "Premium/VIP Job Search Agent Service Fee of $49.95 for 60 days.

They do say there are "free listings" that you can access but they have either very little or nothing in common with your resume. For some of us, $50 for 2 months of access to their search results may be too pricey. In any case, they do not tell you about the fees up front! Not a good way to establish a relationship with me.

Here is the unsolicited email I received from them. I should have known something wasn't right when the email came from a yahoo account.

I like Dan's idea of all the combined Talent forming a Company here.

A good thought, however there are probably some pretty big gaping holes in our list of talents that would be needed for a successful company.

1. A vision.
A company needs a product (or products) to sell, it needs a strong vision of why it exists and where it is going and how it is going to get there.

2. Marketing geeks.
Nothing happens without sales. Somehow I get the feeling most of the folks here are adept and doing & making stuff - not selling it.

3. Funding.
Takes money to make money.

I have already ventured into this idea with our very own DanC and RaySun2Be. DanC made the Logo for DSLModemsDirect.com which was only just launched this past Jan 24. Our very own RaySun2Be has been doing an excellent job at Marketing. While it is on a small scale now it has the potential of being larger in scale with expansion of Products and Marketing and Shipping reach.

DSLModemDirect.com was done on a very small budget.

I have noticed a resurgence of Dot Com commercials on TV. Maybe this time around Business Venturists realize that you do not need 200 employees and $60 Million dollars to make and run a Website.

AMEN!!!

I know better than most just exactly how inexpensive it can be done! I also know that there's still money to be made in internet related programming.

Example:
Last fall I pulled down about $30K+ doing one database enabled media site, I didn't do the html / graphics / planning / or data entry, I just set it up so they could do it for themselves and have all their media files easily searchable / displayable from an SQL database.

What is not recommended (IMHO):

html design for pay - companies always have someone who can do this on staff, kids can do it / owners brother in law makes web pages etc...

What they usually can't do for themselves (so you can make good money doing it for them):

high quality web graphics
database applications
complicated site design (navigation system tying their site together)
java, php, coldfusion, asp, interactivity with email (forms that work) etc...
media (mp3, wma, real)

I'm sure there's more, this is just off the top of my noggin.

I could certainly put a marketing/sales staff in place. I can also get VC funding if you'd like to go that route Also don't mind writing the business plan......

What is the product?

Perhaps what we need is a virtual brainstorming thread.

Unfortunately - it'd have to be private, otherwise all the great ideas would go out to the world, and we'd hand away free ideas.

May I suggest Gary & Dan's website over in the U.K. for discussions? This can most certainly be a Global venture Company. One of the key people we will need will be a Corporate Attorney, if no objections I would ask the Attorney I already know and many people know here as well.

Edit: I started a thread on the offsite UK site, you can't miss it. Let's do it folks. World, look out, we're coming...

Well... I'm still looking for work after getting laid off the 1st of December... I'm considering looking for something outside of IT for awhile. Gotta pay bills ya know.... Also, I could then afford to get some additional training/certification if I had some money comming in.....

I suppose we could all volunteer to go to Iraq and put the place back together infrastructure and IT-wise...

I guess I'd just as soon the bullets stopped flying around first.

My name is Oleg, I live in NY (Brooklyn)
I have been in IT field for over 12 years. Now I work in construction ( have to pay the bills some how).
Last time I worked in IT was December, 2001.
I have a decent resume and some good companies but things are real bad around here. So, if anyone hears anything please lemme know. I am dying for a computer jobs.
Some of the places I've worked for are Morgan Stanley, JP Morgan, TheStreet.com, Village Voice, Seagrams, etc.

Good luck to everybody who's still looking.

FINALLY...

I have a "second interview" today.
It's a pretty good opportunity - just a bit less than where I was before, but an exciting company and position!

I'm seeing a sudden surge in advertising, and hits on my resume's across the board. There's more activity right now than in the past 16 months. Hopefully it's that way for everyone.

I've got my fingers crossed. My unemployment runs out in a couple of weeks.

Good luck Dan, yes, there seems to be a bit more activity. People have been posting on Off Topic that they have landed jobs.

Thanks Dave.

It seemed to go pretty well. He was upbeat all the way through... (lasted 48 minutes) He even was joking around a bit - so I'm interpreting that as a good sign. Usually, they don't talk about "next steps" unless they plan to make you part of them - so my fingers remain crossed.

Landed ANOTHER interview with a different company on Wednesday - so maybe this 'long haul' is just about over.

Good Luck Danc, keep us posted.

Nothing much here, actually fewer postings lately. I did get an phone interview, but haven't heard anything back, and it's been over a week now.

I almost hate to say anything, but I think I got a nibble... I'll hear more in the next few days, and I might be able to interview and possibly start in a week or 2....

If this doesn't happen.. I might go to trucking school and hit the road for awhile... I can't stand it anymore not having a job.....

(patiently waiting and hoping....)

Well... the interview was in a word - Arduous.

3 1/2 hours. :Q

Met with 'everyone' for about 10 minutes - a 'getting to know you' - then
45 minutes with the lab tech, who is every bit as geeky and a "mad scientist" as I am. Nice guy. Then a tour of the lab...

Next 45 minutes with the V.P. of Engineering. Nice guy. Seemed to go pretty well... he was very pleasant, and engaging.

Last, 1 1/2 hours with the co-founder and VP, and the Senior Engineer. This one was worse than any Microsoft interview I've ever had. They were throwing real-live engineering problems at me.

I have no idea how I did. I was left with a feeling of ambivalence. It's always intimidating when you meet with someone you KNOW is smarter than you are. Both these guys are frighteningly brilliant. Anyway - got my fingers crossed. Can't imagine them taking that much of their day if I was just being blown off... but who knows? At least it was an interview.
