Looking to set up some sort of in-game chat option for our Madden League and trying to figure out if these voice chat services work, cause lag and which is better than the other.

Do we need to get a dedicated server or ???

What would be cool is if while 2 GMs are playing (and chatting) other GMs could listen in if they wanted...

Suggestions?

IME vent has been the best overall. Pretty fast, clear and easy.

Haven't tried those other two you've mentioned, but my friends and I are reasonably happy with Skype - we just launch a conference call before starting a gaming session online.

Teamspeak is the way to go if you have a dedicated server. I love it and run my own now for my guild.

teamspeak is free and if you have your own dedicated server, i'd go with that.

Ventrilo on the other hand isn't free. Well, maybe it is, I just didn't know how to set up a server on my own. Plus it's a bit more complicated then teamspeak, so I have a hosting company host it.

Ventrilo has great sound. Compared to TS it's like your on a cell phone with your friends.

Personally, I'd go Ventrilo. I've used TS before, even had my own server up..

whats the bandwidth usage like on TS or similar?
I mean can I host on my own home server (45Kbps upload)... I'd imagine a the MAX I'd have 6-8 users on at once... MAYBE 10 on a heavy day.
I just want GMs in my Madden league to be able to chat while they play if they want. And I assume that if they are chatting on my home-hosted server and I want to use the bandwidth for my own greddy needs, I can just shut the server down and they get disconnected?

Ventrilo is perfect, but you'd have to get serious about hosting it. Meaning, every Ventrilo setup I've seen has been on a real server with plenty of bandwidth and a 100 user license.

My friend has a server and we use Ventrilo for our gaming. We were using Roger Wilco up until recently but Ventrilo is hands down better. It sounds very good and as was mentioned above, isn't totally dissimilar from being on a cell phone with someone. We've all since purchased better headphones and mics to play and that just makes Ventrilo sound even better. Can't vouch for Teamspeak as I've never used it.

Ventrilo> Teamspeak> Roger Wilco> Xfire

http://www.darkstarllc.com is where I rent mine from, and has been great. I have a 30 user license for 10$ a month, with full control over the codecs. If you want to hear the voice quality just let me know, I can be on after 5:00est on mine, just shoot me a PM.

We use public Teamspeak servers for our BF2 group. You can refresh the list on the join tab and find one. Just find one using a high bitrate speex codec and that allows you to create a private room.
