Teamspeak vs Ventrilo

I'm looking to set up a voice chat server for me and a handful of friends who play World of Warcraft, however my upstream connection is somewhat limited.

Does anybody know - or know of a site that lists - the bandwidth usage of both Teamspeak and Ventrilo?

I'm too lazy to run my own benchmarks, but if I have to I guess I can.

I ran a teamspeak server from home and would have about 8-10 guys on at once. This is when my upload was only at 256 and I didn't experience any problems in gaming.

This was while playing BF 1942.

Vent, but vent has better voice quality, so I would use that instead.

I'd say Teamspeak, mainly because you can set up a private room on a huge amount of public servers. Just open Teamspeak, click join, click the servers tab and let it populate. Join any public server and see if you can create a room, if you can it means you can password it for your buddies and no one else can join.

We've been using the same two TS servers for over a year for BF2 and CS:S (We use Xobnet and Nickware). What's nice is that the first player on for the evening can set up the server room and everyone else just joins as they come online. Much better than having one guy in control of the server.

I'd also suggest picking a server that uses the Speex codec, it's also used by Ventrilo and it sounds amazing.

I'm not worried about server control; It'll be hosted on a Windows 2k3 server in my closet accessible via Remote Desktop to folks on my Hamachi network.

The Teamspeak public server thing sounds tempting though... not wasting my bandwidth can't hurt.

I use both Vent and Teamspeak, and Teamspeak seems clearer to me.
I play COD and COD2, and in COD2 I sometimes get serious lag with Vent (like 20 seconds).

Could the bandwith difference between these two programs really affect your gameplay that much? WoW isnt really a system hog either

I have about 400kbit of upstream ... I toyed with both TS and Vent on my home connection and found that up to about 8 people .... they both worked decently. (This is with WoW running as well.) Any more and I'd have to make some sacrifices to the sound quality and go with a lowwer codec.

My guild runs ZG a lot now, and we often have 5 man groups going at the same time as well.

We decided to opt for a 50 user Teamspeak server, and thus far I am quite happy with it.
