I needed to get into my Netbook for something else and in the process I managed to mess up screen dimming. Screen became stuck at full brightness.
This premium netbook with Windows 7 Home Premium retailed for around $400 when it was new. It has a dual core CPU with hardware accelerated graphics that can playback 720p smoothly and has a HDMI port. It looks sleek and quality feels competitive with higher priced laptops. The battery life of 6-7 hours was considered exceptional back then.
They didn't intend for this laptop to be serviced in first world country. Labor cost would be too much to justify any type of repair. It is obviously once you're inside.
That's how you get EMI shield on the cheap. It has the buttons on the top panel on a screwed board so it is more serviceable than the cheapest of cheap laptops with buttons soldered on the motherboard.
Oops. This was bound to happen trying to open up something not really meant to open up with couple years of wear and tear.
These are what holds keyboard in place
This is what went wrong. Chassis is assembled with snap tabs and strong double sided tape. Very cheap to assemble. Woven conductive cable shield tore open while detaching it from the double sided tape. It frayed at the tear and shorted the back light control circuit on the left and caused the screen to become stuck no full brightness. It worked fine right after putting it back together and problem didn't show up until a day later. Luckily backlight dimming worked after I taped up the frayed shield.
Damage is already done though. I had to trouble shoot things on software side, then open the laptop backup to fix it. That's an hour and half I'll never get back.
