Maybe the toughest I got asked when I was a technical guy:
"what was the most creative engineering/solution you've done and why?"
But for the most part a technical interview should weed out the "I put a bunch of stuff on my resume because it sounded good" folks.
Funniest interview I've given...
Me - "So it says you're familiar with IP routing and routing protocols"
Young dumbass - "yeah, I can do just about anything"
Me - "really? How so?
YD - "ospf, bgp, you name it i've got it down."
Me - "cool, we run both. Can you site some examples of how you used OSPF to limit routing advertisements and hide link flapping?"
YD - "well, its just a routing thing. You don't need to worry about that."
Me - "really?"
YD - "yeah, as long as you can ping everything is good. OSPF handles that for ya."
Me - "What does OSPF stand for?" (at this point I'm ready to throw him out of my office)
YD - "umm, well, umm, well you don't need to know what it stands for to use it"
Me - "Fair enough, can you tell me any feature at all that OSPF uses or needs?"
YD - "No."
Me - "Thank you. And next time, don't lie on your resume."
