Like the title, Technics SA-DX950 @ J&R Music World, $199 +$18 shipping, - $50 MIR. Not audiophile quality, but good enough for me... AudioReview

I got it from netmarket. It's even cheaper, I think.

But right after I got the receiver (before I hooked it up), sb posted here saying all Technics receivers have heat problem. I did test. By just turn on the receiver, even at 0 vol no sound signal, the temp will raise to 82 on the case. Is that normal? That's my 1st receiver.

Also, I heard there is no way to output 5.1 audio from win 2k and XP. Is that the reason I only get Dolby Prologic from my PC (even while playing DVD)?

I am using cheapo CL PCI128 card which does have SPDIF out.

Any reciever will get warm turned on even with no volume.Possibly the technics run hotter than some others,but its not a problem.Ive had a technics sa-626 for around 18 years! one of the first all digital recievers and with the exception of the power switch going (which was an optional repair,since it went in the on position..)it still sounds great.Panasonic is made by the same parent company and as far as im concerned theyve always made quality.

My 12-year-old SA-GX500 was toasty warm at all times. As I understood it back then, that was a signature of a Class-A amplifier, the better kind. It finally gave out on me a few months ago, and the cost to repair it was about 1/2 what it cost to replace it with a nice Pioneer. I do miss that parametric equalizer, but I did step up to Dolby Digital and SRS in the process though!
Oh, and the Pioneer runs pretty warm too. My cat would have been heartbroken if she lost her favorite hot spot.

I bought this at christmas, an upgrade from my old Prologic receiver....this works great!!! A little warm but they all are. One note: This DOES NOT HAVE S-Video inputs as most receivers do nowadays. Other than that, great unit!

Haven't received the rebate yet and still waiting.

This is an amplifier, people.... They do put off heat. This is not a CPU to be overclocked. If you would like to add fans and a big heatsink to it, be my guest. However, amplifiers warm up.

By the way. I have this receiver. Got it at Best Buy a while ago. I like it. Works well and has a simple layout. It is not covered with knobs and lights all over the front. I got the MIR as well, but it took a little while.

Yes, they're still available & rebate is still good. I recieved mine & was disappointed to see that it did not have SVHS inputs. The SA-DX1050 does have SVHS, but it's >$250 after rebate

I would not recommend Technics receivers, I had Technics DX-930 that I bought from ValueAmerica in 1999, it died in October 2001. You can cook an omlet on one of these.
