That article didn't cite the full speech, obviously

I'll look for a transcript link.

But if is his quote, I find that mighty interesting.

One part, "politics of fear" I believe critisizes GWB and the Neocons.

The other part, "politics of personal destruction" seems aimed at squarely at the Clintons.

So Ted, in one sentance groups the Clintons in with GWB and criticizes them both?

If true, ouch - Billary must be mighty "red-faced" today. :Q

Clearly, he is taking swipes at the establishment. That would be Bush and Clinton.

How are a long string of endoresments of Washington insiders helpful to Obama's campaign when he is running on change and points to the very people endorsing him as emblematic of the broken system he's trying to fix? Are voters to think these incumbents have now seen the light and are going to no longer take lobbyist money, no longer run negative campaign ads, etc?

The people endorsing him, IMO, are not the problem that needs changing. The last 7 years are not the years of Ted Kennedy.

If George Bush, Tom DeLay, or Bill Frist endorse Barack, then I think he has some explaining to do.

Well, the SC victory speech tried to draw the distinction. He said it wasn't about Rep v Dem, but about the politics of the past v the future. He was saying Hillary and Bush, negative campaigning, lobbyists, etc. are all the problem. So the endorsements are coming from these icons of the party, which he characterizes as the past, and part of the problem.

The entire house and a third of the senate is up for reelection too this year, and the negative ads in local elections are always the slimiest. When Obama's endorsers run the types of campaigns he is criticizing now, what then?

Coming from the guy that used to be the democratic establishment, and is now old and bitter because this role has been taken over by the Clintons.

It's ironic that you, someone who is so on the Obama bandwagon with the politics of change, that you are singing the praises of Ted Kennedy, one of the biggest symbols of old-school politics. I guess whatever suits your cause, eh?

Where did, or have, I "praised" Ted Kennedy?

I simply said I agreed with what he said.

Is your sarcasm meter functional?

Yes. That wasn't sarcasm. Do you own a dictionary to look up sarcasm?

If he'd said, 'maybe he bought off Mother Theresa with a case of scotch', that's sarcasm because obviously Mother Theresa did not have an interest in the Scotch.

When he says it about Kennedy, who has a past of excessive drinking, that's not the case.

He may have meant it less than literally - some degree of not really meaning Kennedy is still drinking too much, and some degree of good-natured 'kidding' - but nothing suggests it was good-natured, rather this sort of comment is pretty much 100% of the time I hear it about Kennedy, the sort of knee-jerk way to dismiss him and not discuss his actual views that's not helpful, it's 'humorous' character assassination. It's not literally true about the case - it's exaggeration, it's caricature, it's character assassination.

-snip-

Umm, Craig I think he (Red Dawn) was just joking around.

Fern

I don't. I think he was 'joking', but not in an innocent manner; the 'joke' is simply a reference to Kennedy having a drinking problem, nothing else.

If I made some post 'joking' about you having a sexual attraction to ten year old girls, would that just be an innocent joke, if the reference was as serious as one to Kennedy and alcohol, so that it wasn't simply meant to be outrageous, like the case of sctoch and Mother Teresa I mentioned in the earlier post? No, it'd be an attack in the form of a 'joke'.

It's character assassination, pure and simple, and it's not only wrong to the person who has not behaved badly as far as we know for decades, it's bad for the political discussion.

Trying to dilute the impact of the twin endorsements by the brother and daughter of the late president, the Clinton campaign on Sunday issued a statement of support from Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, a former lieutenant governor in Maryland and a daughter of Robert F. Kennedy.

?I respect Caroline and Teddy?s decision, but I have made a different choice,? Ms. Townsend said in her statement, adding: ?At this moment when so much is at stake at home and overseas, I urge our fellow Americans to support Hillary Clinton. That is why my brother Bobby, my sister Kerry, and I are supporting Hillary Clinton.?

I really don?t think Obama is electable.
He got a huge black vote in SC, but notice it was NOT Obama but
Edwards taking the white male vote.

This is very bad for Obama. I smell a republican in November of 2008.

Kennedy and Kerry are organized throughout the country. Combined with Leahy, basically all top-level Democrats are behind Obama. The only one missing is former President Clinton, for obvious reasons. Hillary had a lot of endorsements from mid-level Democrats early in her campaign, but now that Obama has taken over as the establishment candidate he will begin picking up more and more superdelegates.

As for the racial divide, this is why the party is getting pissed at the Clintons. They saw Obama pull in the white vote in Iowa, and only after race was injected into the debate (and let's not pretend it wasn't, with Bill's Jessie Jackson comments among others), it started to split that way. Obama still got 24% of the white vote so as long as these tensions ease up a bit he will take it back again, especially as white Democrats lose their alternatives.

BS. Senator Diane Feinstein (conservative Democrat) endorsed Hillary.
And Ted Kennedy has been a joke of a Senator for a long time, even to liberal Democrats.
This endorsement does not really help Obama much, and will be a real negative if he makes it to the presidential election.
John Kerry's endorsement? Worthless.
What's next, Jimmy Carter's endorsement?

First off Feinstein isnt a conservative democrat. Shes from CA, and San Fran no less. Shes one of the most liberal in the Senate. She also has less influence than Kennedy. Kennedy still holds a lot of influence.

You are wrong. Feinstein IS a conservative democrat. So what if she is from California, last time I checked Ronald Reagan was from California. And Kennedy's influence has been waning for years.

Funny I don't see Feinstein on that list, but I do see Kennedy.

Feinstein supported the Iraq war resolution in the vote of October 11, 2002; she has claimed that she was misled by President Bush on the reasons for going to war. However, former UN Weapons Inspector in Iraq Scott Ritter has stated that Feinstein in summer 2002 acknowledged to him that she knew the Bush administration had not provided any convincing intelligence to back up its claims about the Iraqi Weapons of Mass Destruction.[14]
In November 2007, Feinstein was one of only six Democrats to vote to confirm Michael Mukasey as Attorney GeneralIn August 2007, Feinstein joined Republicans in the Senate in voting to modify the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) by narrowing the scope of its protections to sharply alter the legal limits on the government's ability to monitor phone calls and email messages of American citizens.[18]
Feinstein voted to give the attorney general and the director of national intelligence the power to approve international surveillance of the communications of Americans entirely within the executive branch, rather than through the special intelligence court established by FISA. Many privacy advocates have decried this law and Senator Feinstein's vote in favour of it.[19]
Feinstein was the original Democratic cosponsor of a bill to extend the USA PATRIOT Act. In a December 2005 statement, Senator Feinstein stated, "I believe the Patriot Act is vital to the protection of the American people
Feinstein is a supporter of capital punishment.
She was the main Democratic sponsor of the failed 2006 constitutional Flag Desecration Amendment

In 2007, activists from within the California Democratic Party made a push to censure Feinstein.[42] The resolution, which cited the Senator for "ignoring Democratic principles and falling so far below the standard of what we expect of our elected officials" ultimately failed.[43] The activists were concerned over her votes to confirm Judge Leslie Southwick and Attorney General Michael Mukasey, and were also concerned about the FISA bill.[44]

He may notice that Ted Kennedy's endorsement was a national news story, but I don't recall Feinstein's endorsement being much of a news story, just regarding that one issue.

I just noticed that no one mentioned the endorsement of Obama by Rep. Patrick Kennedy, you know, the drug addict, and Teddy's son.
I wonder how that endorsement helps. And don't tell me this is ancient history, it's from a long time ago, why are bringing up old shit? This is from 2006.
This guy is a POS who only got elected because of his name.

On May 4, 2006, Kennedy crashed his 1997 Ford Mustang convertible into a barricade on Capitol Hill at 2:45AM. He had been operating his vehicle with the lights off in the early morning darkness. Officers at the scene said that Kennedy appeared intoxicated, smelled of alcohol[3] and was visibly staggering, but Kennedy claimed that he was merely disoriented from prescription medications Ambien and Phenergan.[4] Witnesses had seen Kennedy drinking at the nearby Hawk & Dove bar prior the accident.[5] [6] Kennedy also stated to officers that he was "late for a vote." However, the last vote of the night had occurred almost six hours earlier. The standard field sobriety test was not administered. Kennedy was driven home by an officer.

On May 5, 2006, Kennedy admitted he has an addiction to prescription medication and announced he would be re-admitting himself to a drug rehabilitation facility at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota where he has sought treatment for prior addictions.[7] He has stated that he has no recollection of the car crash. On May 8, 2006, Kennedy got a show of support when he was endorsed by the Rhode Island Democratic Party.[8] On June 5, 2006 Kennedy was released from drug rehab.[9]

After being asked if he expected any special treatment from authorities, Kennedy expressed that he hoped they would treat him as if he "were an African-American in Anacostia".[10] On June 13, 2006, Kennedy made a deal with prosecutors and pleaded guilty to a charge of driving under the influence of prescription drugs.[11] He was sentenced to one year probation and a fine of $350. Two of the three charges (reckless driving and failure to exhibit a driving permit) were dismissed. He was also ordered to attend a rehabilitation program that includes weekly urine tests, twice-weekly meetings with a probation officer, near-daily Alcoholics Anonymous meetings and a weekly meeting of recovering addicts [12].

Kennedy has acknowledged being treated for cocaine use during his teenage years[15] and sought treatment for an OxyContin addiction in 2006.[16]

In 2003, drew fire from his critics when he said that "I have never worked a fucking day in my life."

Shes not a conservative democrat, shes pretty far left on most things, and moderate on others. Shes one of the leading proponents of BANNING ALL semi-automatic firearms. I love how you cherry pick less than a handful of issues using WikiPedia. Look up her actual record, and you cannot deem her a conservatice democrat. Shes to far left on to many issues, for that. Has she sided with the GOP on a few issues? Yes, as has almost every Dem from one time to another.

As for people wanted to rebuke her. The far left would love to do the same thing to Nancy Pelosi, that doesnt mean shes a conservative democrat.

Capital punishment is supported by the majority of elected dems in the US Congress. Slowly this changing but as it stands most aren't opposed to it.

The Patriot Act Reauthorization was passed via unanimous consent in the US Senate.

Mukasey was one of the moderate Bush choices. She voted no on Bolton, Alito, Roberts, Gonzales, Ashcroft and many US Federal District Judges. Her record on this mirrors Hillary's, except Hillary didnt vote on the Mukasey confirmation.

As for FISA, 16 Dems supported it. The passage of the Protect America act rests squarely on the shoulders of the Dem Leadership. They had many chances to kill it. Reid and Pelosi have been non existent leaders. Their floor managing skills have proven to be next to none.

Feinstein, voted against the ban on partial birth abortions. Vote yes to allowing federal funds to administer abortions. She voted against the DoMA. Shes one the biggest anti-gun proponentd. Shes very liberal fiscally. Im not saying she is a far lefty, Im saying she is not a conservative democrat. Less than a handful of votes that crossed party lines doesnt mean shes a conservative democrat. One must forget she was one of the Dems main filibusterers when the GOP had control of the Senate. Yes she has had some recent votes that the left has been critical of, but if you take her record as a whole theres not way you can say shes a conservative democrat.

In 2003, drew fire from his critics when he said that "I have never worked a fucking day in my life."

I just love how the Dems are ripping eachother apart now. I can see both parties having major reorganization phases over the next 6 years.

The vitoral by the Clinton camp and her supporters are going to bite them in the ass in the long run. It is going to alienate way to many people.

I live in California, and I can tell you that Feinstein has moved farther and farther to the right over time, alienating many on the left, kind of like Hillary. She is only liberal on a few cherry picked issues like gun control and abortion (duh , she's a woman).

As for Democratic vitriol, this is nothing compared to what the Republicans will bring in the general election. Better to get the negative out there now so it can die down before the election. Politics has always been nasty, especially Republicans. Swift boat anyone?

I have no problem with Obama, and will gladly vote for him if he wins the Democratic nomination. I'm just a little skeptical of this "change" campaign. Change what? and how?

I just prefer Hillary, and believe she has more experience. I would not mind an Obama presidency in four or eight years, though.

I must say, this is almost too much. First Caroline, Now Teddy. Looks like The Hope Train is steamrolling now!

..hardly an accident. there's a plan, on going and in progress to get a liberal extremist elected. if the country's going to suffer great harm it may as well happen with a KOOK in office. I'll vote for obama.

BS. The patriot act reauthorization passed by 89-10 in the senate. Text
And the "liberal" Feinstein voted for it. I notice 10 senators voted against it , all liberal
democrats.
And in the house 207 republicans voted for it, and 18 against. Among Democrats it was
44 in favor with 155 against it.

Sure the Democrats have some conservative members, but the blame for this is strictly on the house republicans and Bush, no matter how hard you try to blame Democrats.
Or maybe you think the patriot act is a great idea?
