i have to question the logic behind this.....new drivers of course are going to have more accidents, they have to learn sometime..i bet these same drivers would have similar problems when they turned 18 if the limit were raised

Personally, I believe the age you can drive should be raised to 18 and the age you can drink legally lowered to 18. At 18 you are close to, or out of high school and headed to college/work. Many are also living on their own and will go to parties and drink anyway if they choose to do so. Just simplify things and make drinking/driving/age of consent all at 18.

IMHO, maturity has a lot to do with this also though. the difference in maturity between 16 year olds and 18 year olds is in most cases quite noticable.

A lot of it may have to do with maturity and a lot of it may have to do with them not having to usually foot the bill for the accidents.

Mommy and Daddy pay for the car, the insurance, and any repairs. So what do they care if they bust it up?

Raising the age to 18 may make some of these drivers better because they have to be more careful due to the financial aspect of it.

The report found that of the 30,917 deaths during the span, 11,177, or 36.2 percent, were teen drivers.

Except when I was 16, I've always been in favor of raising the legal driving age to 18 and stricter driving tests.

I think if you find out how many of those teens had been drinking/doing drugs, you'll realize it's not the age that's killing these people.

Exactly! I've riden with girls in highschool (just a few years ago) that would not pay attention and run stop signs and speed and almost hit things and laugh and scream because they think it's "cute" to drive recklessly. With guys, it's "cool" to drive recklessly in highschool. I'm not saying nobody acts this way at age 18 or in their 20's even, but it happens way less. Maturity is a huge factor.

I would also support lowering the drinking age to 18 as well.

I'm not sure about the age increase, but I do agree that the tests need to be harder...

I am pretty sure they need to reverse the order. Make drinking beer/wine legal at 16... and hard liquor at 17. Then make the driving age 18. Absolutely no reason in hell why a person can vote, or join the military, but legally can't drink. It's insane.

Let them get their drinking out before they start driving!

How is that working? I would imagine it would take a few years before the numbers start to take notice.

I lot of places are already doing this to a degree by making the license process more drawn out...
link

Some of it is BS, some of it is a good idea...

I don't understand why they are restricted late at night....sounds like some nanny state conservative stuff...when you start doing that...

When conservative get ahold of this stuff remember they always have ulterior motives...

DWI's are a perfect example.... It's not just the drinking and driving they go after (if it were just that then fine)... It's the drinking they attack itself as well because they view it as sinful...

In Europe they attack just the drinking and driving and don't include all the anti-alcohol stuff. Which makes people take the movement more seriously...

You know some people actually have to <gasp> work while in school. Also, some people have to parents who <gasp> both work and can't chauffer their kids to everything. Some school districts can't afford to <gasp choke cough> to bus students to events and sports practices.

/need to get checked for asthma

Edit: Also, this is a state thing

Agree with the age 18 thing all the way. Most if not all of Europe driving age is at 18. The maturity difference between age 16 and 18 is pretty big.

LOL! Conservatives.......The law was passed here in Missouri under a Dem. Gov & Dem controled State House to limit driving about the way you stated. At first they have to drive with a parent/adult for 6 months, then drive by themselves during daylight hours only for the next 6 months and finally, after that can drive anytime by themselves legally.

Very true. In Washington State (solid blue for years), we've adopted all these laws as well as the harsh drinking laws as well.

Almost all of the rural democrats in Missouri are conservatives...

Imo it's insane that people can get a drivers license before they're 18. Hell, even 18 is pushing it to me.

Other countries also have better transit systems. Other countries also help pay for college.

Both liberals and conservatives seem to be in favor of these laws. Washington State is one of the most liberal states and we have adopted the ones you mentioned. I'm sure we can find examples of solid conservative states with similar laws. My point is that I think it was incorrect to mention that conservatives are the main advocates of these laws.
